Any betas out there?

Yes, I am SGA Santa obsessed. I'm so happy it's back, I've already got the rough outlines of one fic, and finished another. (Shh, it's okay if my recipient gets two fics.)

So. First draft of SGA Santa fic, a little shy of 5,000 words. Lots of action and excitement. Gen with implied pre-slash.

What it needs is a little help on the conclusion (it's weak, I know), and there's a scene that I should probably delete ... but maybe it needs it? If so, it has to be longer. There are jump-cuts in time that I need to be sure are clear.

Then once the pieces are in place, the next draft (hopefully?) needs the electronic polisher.

There's a new SGA Santa exchange -- AND NOBODY TOLD ME???

I went back to the old SGA Santa comm to wistfully kick cans, wishing it weren't over, just ... hopeful ... that this year Alyse had changed her mind.

Maybe it was instinct.

Maybe it was an old friend rereading my fic for her from last year.

I can't do Yuletide. I tried. Random micro-fandoms don't work for me. I'm too much a fandom monogamist.

And there was the announcement. A new SGA Secret Santa comm!

I rushed over to sign up.

The last day to sign up was last week.

Not even exaggerating when I say I'm heartbroken and on the verge of tears.
icarus: Snape by mysterious artist (Default)
I did it again. I found another SGA Santa fic that I never posted outside the comm.

I realize I've been busy.

I realize I've had a job that doesn't give me two days off in a row.

But really, there's no excuse.

On the plus side, that means we've uncovered an entire cache of fics. Here you go:

Title: Toy Drums & Soldiers
Author: icarusancalion
Recipient: sabinelagrande
Pairing: John/Rodney
Rating: PG-13
Disclaimer: Mild references to D/s.
Author's Notes: Sabinelagrande asked Santa for kinky fic with or without sex, and humor, and lots of other things I didn't include. Santa's sleigh was crowded! I couldn't resist a team fic and presents. Lots and lots of presents. Thank you to busaikko and rabidfan for the rapid, cheerful betas. I can always count on you.
Summary: The Atlantis expedition exchanges Christmas gifts, banter, and inside jokes.

('Coal?' Ronon asked.

'It's an oily mineral. You burn it to keep warm,' John explained.

'Valuable gift,' Ronon commented.

Amazingly, I totally forgot to post this anywhere besides the SGA Santa community.

Title: Sheppard and the Mud Frogs
Author: Santa (icarusancalion)
Recipient: aqualegia
Characters: John, Rodney, mud frogs, and a shiny, shiny stargate
Rating: PG
Notes: For sga_santa 2013 edition. I got a very open request so I hope this was on your Christmas list. Beta by the ever-forgiving [personal profile] rabidfan and [personal profile] sarka.
The fact that they'd landed at all, let alone in one piece, would've left NASA breathless in wonder.

It's official. Three-quarters of my job has officially ended.

The tutoring center's open till Saturday, but just to box things up. I filled my car with textbooks bound to another center last night. No students remain.

I stayed up till dawn playing on the internet. I have my first weekend off in I don't know how long. (I worked weekends.) Am picking up hours in another tutoring center already, so the fear and pressure of job loss is gone. Your prayers and good wishes (and laughter over the disappearing furniture) are much appreciated and I think the reason why I've been so level (and amused).

As dawn painted the sky ... I found two lost ficlets from last summer:

Feel Your Way
John Sheppard is caught between his conscience, his duty, and his career.
"They're gonna waste me, Teyla. They're gonna waste my time."

Elizabeth Weir, System Lord
Rewatching SG-1's "New Order," I thought no... Elizabeth would be a savvy, gutsy, and creative negotiator.
After defeating of Anubis with a now-dead weapons platform, the new leader of Stargate command negotiates with the System Lords. "Enslaving millions of people, slaughtering innocents, yes, that's what the Stargate program is all about."

ETA: grrr... didn't post to LJ.

ETA2: Aha! Figured out why my posts stopped crossposting to LJ.

Oh my God. A fic. A whole, completed fic.

Title: Holding Patterns
Fandom(s): Stargate Atlantis
Author: Icarus
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: John/Rodney, Ronon, Teyla, Daniel Jackson, Jack O'Neill, Teal'c
Summary: Rodney's promoted, John's reassigned to lightswitch duty, the Jaffa have founded the new intergalactic Geneva, and home is not what it's cracked up to be.

A/N: Written for Ksen, who requested John Sheppard studying for the bar exam. Thanks to you and [personal profile] rabidfan for being there and helping me with grad school apps. All beta credit goes to [personal profile] rabidfan. If there are mistakes I probably added them in after the fact. Wow. I wrote a whole fic.

Feel Your Way
by Icarus

John lay with his head on his folded arms, back to the door. The engines of the Daedalus thrummed.

Cup of coffee in hand -- Teyla regretted ever trying the Terran drink, she now had to have it every day -- she settled in the seat across from him and waited. John's shoulders simply rose and fell for long moments though she could tell he wasn't asleep.

Finally, he sat up with a sigh, rolled his shoulders and then rested his chin on his fists.

"I go into battle, I know what I'm doing, I know who the enemy is," he started. "This... leaving. Abandoning Atlantis to the Ancients. I'm pulled in a hundred different directions. I don't know which voice in my head to believe."

"You hear voices?"

He snorted. "You know what I mean. I've never been a blind follower."

That was an understatement. She contented herself with a small smile in response.

"It feels wrong," John said. "Leaving Atlantis feels wrong. What will these Ancients do to help the Pegasus Galaxy? We have a job to do and we're abandoning our posts." He rubbed his face. "But it's their place, you know. It's the right, good, ethical thing to do to give Atlantis back, and I don't regret that, not for one second. They should have their home. I just...." He gazed off towards the star portal. It was not a real window she'd learned, but a projection screen of what lay just beyond.

Teyla raised her eyebrows as the silence stretched for longer than she'd anticipated.

"I'm pulled in too many different directions right now," he admitted. "I don't know what to do next."

"Do you not have orders?" Teyla asked.

"Yeah, orders. There's another contradictory, total mess. I'm gonna be reassigned, they're putting me on a gate team--truth is, the IOA doesn't know what to do with me. Lt. Colonel's too high up to just stick back in the rank and file where they want me, but I'm too ... okay, mm, unpredictable, I'll admit it... to give me any real authority."

John looked her straight in the eyes. "They're gonna waste me, Teyla. They're gonna waste my time."

"Is there no one you can speak to?" She frowned.

"Eh. O'Neill's busy, he's gotta deal with the handover to the Ancients--a job I don't envy, by the way. I don't wanna bother him with this. What's one soldier's career?"

"Perhaps you mean more to him than just any soldier?"

John didn't say anything.

"Sometimes one must ask for help."

On breaking the rules

I have a rule: do not change published stories.

Once it's out there, for good or ill, I leave it alone.

All authors want to fiddle, I suppose. Even Huxley once said he itched to change A Brave New World. He felt he'd been far too naive(!).

But tinkering, you risk losing what worked.

I'm breaking my rule.

A reader on ff.net pointed out that Star Drive is a good story, but it drops off a cliff. Exactly what my beta said in 2010. I agreed but I was one day away from the deadline.

[personal profile] enname helped me fix it.

Welcome to the new, improved Star Drive.

Ten thousand years ago, a cabal of militant anti-Ascensionists had a plan to force the Ancients to stand and fight the Wraith. Today, all they need is John Sheppard to set it into motion.
icarus: Snape by mysterious artist (Default)
Title: The Pudding Cup Caper
Fandom: SGA
Pairing: Rodney, John
Rating: PG
A/N: Thank you to Rabidfan for the enthusiastic beta, and Sarka for noodging me into writing: your turn.
Summary: Twelve hundred pudding cups, gone. With a new supply chain from earth, John had hoped he wouldn't have to police the hoarders anymore. (Set just after the beginning of season two.)

Twelve hundred pudding cups, gone. )

Friday weather report: Sitting in my little flat, the rain has tapered off. Tornado warnings didn't phase the kitty boys who purred next to me, their eyes half-lidded.

I have things arranged so that I look at the tidiest, most well-decorated corner of the room. A brass music stand. A prim table with lace tablecloth I crocheted myself holding a glass vase with pampas grass plumes. Very pretty. I can ignore the half-finished projects scattered around the rest of the room.

Kiddie report: I had one student make tremendous progress this week. So proud of him. Last Saturday, after a year of public school World History classes, he couldn't even tell me about the river valley civilizations. By last night, he could recap all of world history. Was it enough to pass the test?

His parents want a guarantee. My boss wants a guarantee. He has the general picture, yes. But it's a tough test. Does he know enough detail? I can only say that he's done well, but a week isn't much time to learn the entire history of the world. My boss doesn't like that answer. :/ She's afraid his unrealistic parents (who don't seem to understand he's not in a good school district) will yell at her if they don't get their good score. What he needed most was time management, which was something they can help him with.

And now, fandom report: Ta-da!

I'm pleased to announce that Colls has posted her podfic of...

Title: Collisions podfic! (story here)
Fandom: SGA/SPN crossover
Pairing: Gen, with obligatory slashiness
Rating: PG-13
A/N: Did you know it takes 12,000 words to make a 1,000 word ficlet make sense to two fandoms? Thank you to Rabidfan, Skinscript, Amalthia, Mecurtin, and Wordwitch, who put it through the wringer until it worked for both SGA and SPN fans. Written for the Help Haiti fundraiser and soooooo late. Story sponsored by Somnolentblue who made a donation in exchange for said "ficlet."
Summary: The engine gunned and they caught up, moving alongside the red car long enough for Sam to catch a glimpse of a guy in a bomber jacket and Aviator glasses, his generous mouth in a hard line – until the guy smirked, and cut Dean off at the next turn.

Also, I've posted a new SGA ficlet:

Title: The Scientific Method
Fandom: SGA
Pairing: Rodney/Radek
Rating: PG-13
A/N: Thank you to Rabidfan, IvoryGates, and Sian for the beta help. By way of explanation. I missed the SGA Smooch deadline, and I'm too impatient to wait for a whole week to post. I've starved you guys long enough.
Summary: "Don't do the clock! I hate it when you do the clock!"

[personal profile] torachan has used lyrics as song titles for, oh, it looks about a hundred-million-jillion fics

I bet I'd only done it, what, twice?

Okay, wow. Way more than two.

---> Whoops, missed one, and it was the first one I recalled, too. Hey You (Pink Floyd, Hey You, Percy in a Death Eater run Ministry, unwilling to face he's on the wrong the side. Percy, Ron/Draco, Beg Me For It series.)

A Little Night Music (Steven Sondheim, Send In The Clowns, for the "aren't we a pair?" irony of this HP Hermione/Rita drabble--though the tune doesn't fit at all. :D)

Hotel California (Eagles, Hotel California, captured the steamy sleaze of sex in a boat. SG-1, Jack/Daniel)

Liar's Chair (Johnny Cash, Hurt, for the heaviest John!whumping I've ever done, as an injured John hallucinates a cruel version of himself. SGA Gen, John.)

Pastoral Symphony (Beethoven, Pastoral Symphony, a happy Rodney in his underwear conducting a clock. SGA, John/Rodney)

Rising Sun (Animals, House of the Rising Sun, for the only NC-17 het fic I've ever written, where Harry unintentionally ruins Cho Chang's reputation. Does that link work? HP, Harry/Cho)

Silent Night (Acoustic guitar version of the popular carol, Chet Atkin's sweet and simple version of Silent Night, when John is given an Ud--alien string instrument--and the team camps out under the stars. SGA, team fic, John/Rodney)

The Stars Look Very Different Today (David Bowie, Space Oddity, death!fic to a song of dying in the glory of space without regrets. SGA, Gen, John and Rodney)

We do this, don't we?

Space Oddity, by the way, is likely the greatest song ever written, IMNSHO.

[personal profile] enname says "I have been enjoying watching your web page go back up, it is like a walk through memory lane."

Ah, thank you.

So here are some more, brought to you by the letter "I":

Harry Potter

In Servitude Snape/Peter, R
An evil little fic from the "Dessert series." A nasty, nasty Snape taking out his hatred of the Marauders on Peter Pettigrew.

Stargate Atlantis

In The Spotlight (The Unicorn Remix) John/Rodney (sort of), NC-17
Remix challenge from 2006. You know, I'm not a good candidate for a remix author. I'm almost never re-writing other people's fics, I like them just fine as they are. So this was my first and only remix: I took the story a little further.

New Fic

Progress on that Sanctuary tag has slowed to a crawl. These days it takes a very long time to write.
icarus: Snape by mysterious artist (Default)
Continuing with the repost of my stories on my website. I've 48 more to return to their proper place.

I've now posted up through "C":

HP -

Celebrate Life, Ron/Draco
A steamy one-off from the Beg Me For It series. Originally I had it included right before the last scene, but I decided it didn't work and have left it off the Beg Me For It list ever since.

Council of Obvious Edicts, Harry/Percy, crossdressing, humour
Harry's invited to the Wizengamot Grande Council of Obvious Edicts: "Oh god… kill me now…." And this was the man that so many wanted for Minister of Magic.

Coming Attractions, John/Rodney pre-slash short
John fantasizes over lunch. What he needed was someone who wouldn't change after sex.

Huh. My feedback form isn't working on the fics I've reuploaded. Must have deleted a line of code somewhere.
icarus: Snape by mysterious artist (Default)
Continuing the return of my website, the following stories are once again available:

SGA --
Tanlines and Dogtags - Sheppard/Lorne, UST like whoa
Everyone wondered just where the nude pictures of Colonel Sheppard had come from.

The Wildly Circling Moon - Sheppard/McKay, loud rock n'roll
It was a rule, apparently. Johnny Cash was played as low as heartbreak, while anything with an electric guitar had to test hull integrity.

HP --
Two Way Mirror - Snape/Percy, Seven Shoe Alley
Gritty, anonymous encounters under the shadow of war. A fugitive is at risk of being believed.

Two Men On Top - Snape/Ron (yes, you read that right), personal ad fic follow-up
Pure PWP smut. What happens when you have two natural tops in the bedroom. A follow up to Far Too Personal.

ETA: 48 more to go....
icarus: Snape by mysterious artist (Default)
Scree! SGA Santa done just under the wire.

... I just need to type it.

It's on paper! Written! In ink, er, pencil.

Hellooooooo, techies! I'll trade you a drabble for advice.

It is time.

The laptop I have on indefinite loan from [personal profile] gblvr (hi! *waves*) is now sadly out of date. I can't upgrade from Firefox 2.0.

Slowly over the last few months Gmail, YouTube, Pandora, Twitter, Facebook, have all either stopped working or informed me they're running stripped down versions so "please upgrade your browser!"

AO3 informed me the reason I can't reply to comments is that I'm running Firefox 2.0 so "please upgrade your browser!"

Evernote doesn't work, Flash doesn't work.... This month, Pandora stopped working entirely.

That's it. I'm not going through the holidays without my music.

I'm poking at www.newegg.com to see what I can get to rope my ex into build my own system.

My requirements:

- Ridiculous amounts of hard drive space for downloaded eps and gazillions of copies of novel-length fics (draft 1, draft 23...) and all that music
- The standard USB and HDMI ports
- CD burner
- Decent (but not gamer level) video card
- As upgradeable as possible (which usually means the fastest possible chip) since, as you can tell, I hang on to computers for a while.
- I never take the laptop anywhere, so a desk system is fine.

Two questions.

Firstly: What video card should I get? The ex is used to gamer video cards and has no idea what to get for someone who doesn't need to run, say, WoW.

Secondly: What chip should I get? The ex says that the rate of change is so steep these days, it makes no difference, it's out of date in two years. True. But people who keep up with technology don't understand -- you really can push it. And I do. [personal profile] gblvr's laptop was new in 1999.

And here's your drabble:

Rating: PG-13 shading towards R

To do:

- email resume
- write Out Of Bounds
- work on Tibetan placement test
- work on J/D fic-a-thon assignment
- call professor for autumn class

Instead, I doodle:

"Why can we just… make a ZPM?" Major Sheppard asked with a sigh of exasperation, pushing away from the conference table. Rodney was already rolling his eyes while Dr. Zelenka had dropped his head to his hands but Sheppard ignored them. "We've got smart people here and the entire Ancient database. They knew how to make them. There has to be some kind of schematic or something."

"Yes, we never thought of that, Major, thank you." Rodney folded his arms and tipped his head arrogantly. "Setting aside the length of time that would take – time which we don't have, I might add – it would help if we at least knew what they were called."

"ZPMs," Ford said.

"What the Ancients called them." Rodney gave Ford a withering glance.

"Or something to that effect," John said, smiling, covering for Ford. "There must be some indication. Take crystal A and connect to 'blank' B?"

"Not really…." Zelenka grumbled.

"It's a problem with the Ancient language," Elizabeth explained with a wry smirk. "The Ancients tended to drop nouns. It's meant to be understood from context -- very common in insular cultures."

"Yes, yes. They call them 'units,'" Rodney interrupted. "Attach the unit, connect the unit, and then insert the unit inside the unit."

John gave the scientists a puzzled frown. "Not even unit A, unit B? How do you make sense of that?"

"We use the time-honored formula of 'trial-and-error,' otherwise known as taking one's life into one's own hands." Then Rodney tipped his head and conceded reluctantly, "Or rather, Kavanagh's life, wherever possible." Zelenka nodded.

Elizabeth gave them both a shocked stare, glancing between them.

"He runs faster," Zelenka explained hurriedly,

John unfolded his arms from behind his head, sitting up. "Whoa, you guys aren't going to blow this place up are you?"

"No." Rodney pursed his lips and turned to Zelenka, frowning. "Or at least we haven't so far."

"There was that one time…." Zelenka snickered, shaking his head.

Rodney chuckled. "Oh yeah, I'm so glad we found that switch."
