Daily Happiness
1. I took another early morning walk today. Unfortunately the weather was not quite as pleasant as yesterday and I was pretty sweaty and muggy when I got home, but I did have plenty of time to cool off before having to get dressed for work, so that was good.
2. I am still cced into all the store-side emails at work, despite my new position, so even though they are not priority, it makes for a lot of emails to go through when I've got a long weekend to catch up from. (I am cced by choice, as I want to still be in the loop.) But since they are not my responsibility anymore, it was faster to go through them and catch up, and I was able to do that at home while cooling off from my walk, so I was ready to actually focus on my main tasks once I got settled at work.
3. First day in the new office (well, it's the same office, but the second floor is a U shape and I'm in the opposite end of the U from where I was, and it's an enclosed (shared) room rather than the open space I was in before, so it feels very different). My desk is larger and I like it better than the kind of crappy one I had before, so that's nice. One thing I was bummed about is that it's further from the restroom that I was using, but actually it's very close to one of the first floor restrooms and close to the stairs, so it's faster or about the same amount of time to go to the bathroom, but I also get stairs in every time I go, which is nice.
4. Jasper likes to just chill on my desk sometimes. Thankfully as long as he's lying down, he's not actually in the way of anything.

What I'm Doing Wednesday

I finally finished watching Murderbot S1! (It only took forever bc I suck at visual media.) I loved it and want more! I'm hesitant to dive into fic, though, due to the "murderbot has a penis" and "Gurathin/Murderbot" tags. I want canon-compliant Murderbot adventures, not forcing it to behave in any manner like a sexbot. So, those are 2 things for me to filter out of search... But re the ending, wow, evidently they spent their whole series budget on ep 10 & it became a whole different show. Really satisfying.

no yarn group this week, as too many people were sick or busy. I haven't crocheted on my own in well over a month, as I'm not at all motivated. It's SO frustrating. I'm hoping I can get off one of my meds that affects creativity & regain inspiration. I did at least get 3 kickbunnies listed on etsy...though I haven't promoted them on social media yet due to lack of motivation. OTOH, I have a potential customer waiting on an address to send a bunny to? That's something.

Still having frequent headaches and rationing triptans (I'm not low on them (yet), just being frugal with the stash). The vertigo/feeling faint is bad. Generally, I'm getting 2-16 minutes of Deep sleep per night and not feeling rested at all. ( cut for discussion of weight loss )

noms open in less than 2 weeks, on the 15th, yay! Get your fandoms ready! \o/ And they've upped the number of fandoms you can nom and request! I need to have a look back at the books I've read this year and see what I can manage to offer. Hrm.

Fannish Stuff
The brain weasels have been out in force the past few, uh... well, I was going to say days, and then I realized that it was more like weeks, or months, or years. So let's just leave it as "quite a while" and be done with it.
Anyway, it's September. Autumn is around the corner, which is my favorite time of the year, and I'm desperately going to do my best to force myself to remember how to be a person instead of a constant ball of panic. It's easier said than done with some of the money and work stress going on, but hey! I'm gonna attempt it anyway.
One of the things I'm going to do is really properly attempt to make at least one or two at least fannish-adjacent posts a week. I'm still hoping to make some video game posts like I mentioned in the past (Baldur's Gate? Dragon Age? Mass Effect? something else entirely?) but Critical Role is coming back for its fourth campaign next month so I'm hoping that will pull me back into on that front. Not to mention The Mighty Nein animated series starts Season 1 in November.
Plus exchange season is coming up! There several ongoing and upcoming Dragon Age exchanges, Yuletide is just around the corner, and Holly Poly will be shortly after that. And who knows? Maybe there will be something new that catches my eye.
I just need to focus on the little things and keep putting one foot in front of the other. 🤞🏻

Yuletide is still my favourite multifannish exchange, and this year's schedule is out - nominations start on the 15th. And they're running an experiment with giving us more nominations and requests this year! Very cool, and I hope it works out well!

- The deadline is 12 hours earlier than it was the last few years. (First time in a while that the deadline will be when I'm actually awake, but I'll try not to cut it too close. *g*)
- Reveals are also 12 hours earlier than they've been the last few years. (First time in a while that I'll be awake when the collection opens!)
- We get 5 fandom nominations instead of 4. (Woohoo!)
- We get 8 requests instead of 6! (And again, woohoo! It's so hard to choose between rare fandoms.)

What I've recently finished reading:
Empire of Silence by Christopher Ruocchio went back to the library, because my hold on Summer in Orcus came in. Sorry, Chris, I might try it again sometime.
Summer in Orcus by T. Kingfisher - again a book that someone on my flist recommended. 11-year-old Summer gets whooshed to another world by Baba Yaga, supposedly to find her "heart's desire", though she isn't really sure what that is or how to get it, and oops, the world she's ended up in, Orcus, is in crisis. Other reviews compared it to Narnia (as a more-realistic version), although I didn't really see that - though that's probably because I'm not super familiar with Narnia other than having read it ages ago and mostly forgotten it, as the author's afterword actually mentions the Narnia influence. To me it felt almost like a skewed retelling of The Wizard of Oz: a girl and her pet dog (er, accompanying talking weasel?) pick up companions with issues on a road trip (following a road of a particular color!) to see a powerful being who turns out to be a lot less powerful than everyone thinks. It's even precipitated by a witch and a house! Anyway, I enjoyed it okay, though I kinda wish

I'm rereading Velocity Weapon by Megan E. O'Keefe, which was given to me by a friend years ago, and I read and enjoyed, but after trying and failing to find the sequels at my library, gave up on. Now one of my library systems has the sequels, so I am going to read them, but I figured I should first reread the first book since I've mostly forgotten it.
What I recently finished watching:
The Leopard, the Netflix miniseries, which is apparently a remake of a 1963 movie; both are based on a historical novel published (posthumously) in 1958, by Italian writer Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa. It's basically one noble family's drama around their (for the most part) inability to cope with the 1860 revolution that led to the consolidation of Italian states into the Kingdom of Italy. The family and the titular "Leopard", a minor Sicilian prince, are fictional but apparently based on Lampedusa's ancestors.
It's a costume drama with gorgeous dresses, heaving bosoms, and horses, mostly, plus a little history. It was enjoyable enough to watch, anyway, and it did inspire me to look up some of the actual history.
What I'm watching now:

the Forester (or Summer, or Baba Yaga, or even Reginald) could have actually helped the Queen-in-Chains - I felt sorry for her, trapped by a rash wish made as a teenager. Some people, like the Forester, can grow (maybe literally!) to live with their limitations. Some need help.What I'm reading now:

Yay, I finally accomplished a task I've put off for a year. A trip to drop off a few items at the local Goodwill. The hold up has been carrying stuff down three flights of stairs. As it turned out, it wasn't as bad as I'd expected it to be. A very nice young man unloaded everything for me when I got there (one of the perks to dropping stuff off at Goodwill).
Now I have closet space!

The morning glories are blooming. It's just past the Labour Day long weekend, and they started a few days ago. I got them planted late again this year, well into June. I'm hoping for a slow, gentle fall so they all get a chance to flower.
Last year, right around this time,zulu was dying. We knew, over the long weekend, when the group chat went quiet, that it wasn't a good sign. I'd kept up a a steady stream of pet pictures and other small bits of news. As the summer went on, we had fewer responses from her, and were more likely to just get an emoji back. Morning glory flowers only bloom for a day. I started sending a picture of that morning's flowers to the group chat each day. (And cat pictures. Of course.) I don't know if anyone but me really cared about the morning glories, but it felt like something tangible to hold onto.
We knew things weren't good whenbell mailed to set up a time for a video chat. A few days after the long weekend, we talked to them face to face, to get the news that they were moving zulu into hospice care the next day. It would be the last time we'd hear her voice. We knew it was coming, it just all went so much more quickly than expected. She died less than three weeks later.
And now the morning glories are blooming again, and even though they're my favourite flower and not hers, I'm still going to think of her every year.

Daily Happiness
1. Carla had a doctor's appointment early this morning (7am) so I had offered to drive her since I figured she might be groggy that early in the morning, which she was. I had been very tired the night before and went to bed before ten, so even though I set my alarm for 5:30, I wasn't feeling bad at all. While she was at her appointment, I took a walk and it was really pleasant out. Even though I was out walking for half an hour, I was only a little sweaty towards the end. I might think about taking a walk in the morning before work, even if just on my own. (The weather is supposed to be better for the rest of the ten day forecast but it's still warmer and muggier than I'd like for taking a walk midday.)
2. Since we didn't have anything else planned after that, I was able to do some errands I'd been meaning to get around to and take some stuff to the post office and drop off some clothes at Goodwill.
3. One nice thing about my new position at work is that I feel less tied to my work phone. Although I've offered to help out with area manager stuff, it's not actually my job anymore at all, so I don't need to be constantly checking to see what's going on at the stores and if anything needs to be urgently addressed. can't run out the clock
I made this sheet pan pancake for dinner last night (pic) and it was good, but I don't know that I'd call it a pancake - it is much thicker and not particularly fluffy. The texture is more "cake" than "pancake". But it was good with butter and syrup and will also provide several days of breakfast so I can't complain. It's super easy to throw together, too - no buttermilk needed. The handful of strawbs I had left had gone moldy in the fridge, but I had about 3/4 cup of frozen berries left in the freezer that I folded in and also about 1/4 cup of mini chocolate chips that I sprinkled on top, so that worked out.

It turns out that there is a timeout to the "let's test your equipment" for the browser-based telehealth appointments with my therapist. That timeout is 5 minutes. I had to switch to my phone, which is always vexatious for me.
Recently, Belovedest hauled Dad's old machine (dubbed Galumph, after the imaginary draft horse stallion Dad always talked about as his preferred riding beast) out to test it and see if it would run. (The massive monitor that came with it did not run, but I have found a suitably crusty-looking TV and other screen based appliance repair shop to attempt a repair.) Galumph ran. Belovedest looked at the specs. "That's a freaking RACK SERVER masquerading as a desktop!!!" they said, or words to that general effect.
So after we returned from the Michigan trip, I told Belovedest that it was time to take them up on their offer to rebox my poor old suffering machine.
I accidentally gave them the wrong figures for my C: and D: drives, so there was a bit of a flurry at first, but after they switched them, they were able to get to a login screen. I opened my Chrome / User Data / Default / Sessions folder, copied the most recent Tabs_* and Session_* files to a subfolder that I've named "Explicit Distrust" and launched my browser.
All 1,5XX tabs opened.
I've been trying to decrease them a little bit ever since, starting with my Main window, where the tabs tend to proliferate with abandon. (Trying to do this on the old hardware took forever, in addition to me getting distracted by shiny things.)

United Healthcare is at it again
United Healthcare sent me a letter, dated August 26, to tell me that they were taking away my primary care of record (not actually my real primary care) -- retroactively not covered since May 16. And assigning me to someone whose UHC profile shows that he only takes 0-17 year old patients.
"If you have any questions" I could call in. Where I learned that there were a lot of those letters sent out in error.
I requested that the UHC phone agent quote me with any creative profanity she'd like to attribute to me when conveying my displeasure to her supervisors.
I called the schedulers listed for my "new primary care", who instructed me to call UHC back to say that I wanted to keep my actual primary care doctor (who I've had since my former nurse-practitioner went into Infectious Diseases. And gave me the "MPI" number of my current doctor, and further instructions on how to make this happen. (But it can't continue happening until tomorrow, because both of them close down their phones at 5.)
Kudos to that agent, who was on the phone with me past her scheduled departure time. I thanked her for that.

Going back to work
I start my new job tomorrow! My brain is a hive of bees.
I've been out of work since I was laid off in July 2024. It would have been really inconvenient to be working for a lot of that time, as I was helping my brother see our mother through her decline and death from dementia and also having some serious health issues of my own. (And Mom left me some money, which allowed me to say "I'm too stressed to job-hunt" and then not job-hunt, a rare luxury that I'm very grateful for.)
But I have to admit I've also been bored and restless and lonely. It will be nice to have co-workers, and tasks, and a paycheck again.
On the other hand, it's been thirteen months since I consistently had to be any place in particular in the morning. And the cat is going to be sad.

I haven't been posting much lately - or rather, in a long while. In March I crashed pretty hard after a writing marathon, and then work got very busy for a very long time, so I spent several months putting almost all my energy into that. Until late May I kept thinking I could do more, fannishly, but after that I gave up on keeping up with anything other than the Guardian novel readalong on sid_guardian. August has been (finally) back to normal at work, but the month just flew past before I could get back on my feet, never mind in the saddle. *g*
But this month I'm trying to make that happen. Writing more than alibi sentences: something I need to relearn, LOL.
And I'm trying to post more again here too, finally! My plan for that is twofold:
For today, here's another thing I did do recently, together withchina_shop: preparing for guardian_wishlist! And then sign-ups just opened at the end of August:
I really love this fest. It's our Guardian-and-related-fandoms version offandomtrees (rules), and we're in our fifth year already, wow! I love that this fandom is still going strong. :D

We already have 8 sign-ups! I haven't finished mine yet, but soon. Definitely hoping so see some more of you there as well! ♥ ♥ ♥
