The Draft

*snarl*

A local paper, The Stranger, picked up my article for the Collegian on the draft. But they didn't do my careful research and printed a lot of facts that are out on websites and forums, but are simply not true. Then they didn't credit my article, though they've obviously referenced it. She does reference an article last January in Vancouver, but her article has come only a few weeks after mine...?

Okay. I'm glad I managed to get some attention to the facts. And The Stranger is not known for their careful research and lack of bias anyway. But with all this misinformation she's managed to discredit the issue.

Though I do feel complimented that a major local weekly read and followed up on my article.

Oh, how annoying. The Stranger is kinda notorious for its un-kosher practices. At some point, every published writer has her/his work lifted, altered just enough to avoid direct plagiarism, and presented as new. It's annoying as hell.

Maybe you should offer to freelance for them, since they seem to find your writing so compelling. ;)

The Stranger, like it's sister publiction The Mercury ( here in Portland) I sknow for it's sloppiness. They mean well, and do want progressive street cred, but their writers are not well versed in journalism at all.

Well, you're seeing the best in it, it seems.

Still, misinformation and having information of yours used without credit sucks. The only alternative, I fear, is to do no writing yourself (please don't choose that one!) or be so uninformed that you don't notice when someone's printing rubbish.

I guess you're better off the way you are.

(Any chance that sending a complaint to that news paper might have an effect?)

Bah. That compliment was rather warped in that case. Did you email her? Or not worth it?
