This sucks.

And in case I haven't made this clear:

Having my computer die? It Really Sucks.

::hughughug:: I know your pain only too well. :( I hope your computer gets better soon.

And I shall take the advice offered in your email. It's all very helpful, thank you. :)

*whimpers*

I need this computer. I need it for my homework - I've two assignments due Monday, typed and double-spaced. I also need it for two writing projects that are due next week (one on Monday). I need it for two editing projects I'm working on (one for a monk's pledge drive, another for a resume), in addition to beta work. I need it for my entertainment. I need it to stay in touch with my friends.

And, damn it, I need it for fic.

You sure do.

*bangs head on keyboard*

It's not just the withdrawal symptoms that are bad. It used to be I could write any time I needed, do homework in flex-time. Now I have to plan my schedule carefully and try to write while crammed in a line of people.

Shitshitshit I have stuff due Monday....

Oh my God. OH MY GOD. You have my utter and total empathy. One of my computers once went on fire, another started to destroy the floppies on which I was saving work and THEN went bust... You have my sympathy. Wish I could do something for you, like lend you my old Compaq that's still working, but you are in one of those weird places on another continent...

Thank you. *stares at computer, disconsolately*

I feel your pain. Last weekend my geek brother suggested fitting a second hard-drive "to minimise the risk if the old one crashes". Needless to say, once we installed the second drive, we discovered that the first one had corrupted while we were performing the surgery. Everything gone.

Mercifully, I had almost everything backed up. Lost all my e-mail, some pics, some fics, some music files. The important stuff was safe.

Just a thought, but had you considered investing in a USB key drive? They range from 62MB to 1GB in size and just plug into a USB port, with no extra software or anything. You can hang them on your keyring :-) The reason I saved so much was because I had all my own stories etc on a 512MB key drive.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

[identity profile] fourth-moon.livejournal.com 2005-01-28 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh dear... You have my sympathy. I've been at that point one or two times, and loosing all once precious, precious data and bookmarks, together with comfortable internet access - bitter.

*hugs*, and I hope you'll have it fixed / a new computer up and running as soon as possible.

[identity profile] arkiewriter.livejournal.com 2005-01-28 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I second the suggestion of a USB keychain. They had them at Walmart the other night for $25-30 for a 128MB keychain drive. Much less expensive than an extra hard drive - and portable to boot. I've got to get one myself before my old 350mhz desktop keels over from old age.

*hugs* computer problems suck!

Dude, I am reformatting my baby on Sunday because it died.

There is no pain like computer pain.

Oh, hon, I so understand. I just got my laptop back today from having to send it back to Apple to have the hard drive replaced after it crashed last week. Lost everything that wasn't on my USB stick drive. Fics, chats, freelance projects, applications. :(

*hugs you hard*

I highly reccommend getting a stick drive. They're inexpensive compared to a external HD and do well with backing up text documents especially. You can get them up to 1 GB, I believe. Look around for a good price though...you can find them fairly cheap at times.

You have my deep sympathy. It happended to me too- and get this:

I lost every FRIGGING FILE.

EVEN MY NANO.

Gah.

Backup? :(

And most of my students have them. I don't care if they do homework at the desk working as long as they get up and help folks cheerfully when they need to. They plug them in, work on their stuff, don't save to my computers, take them away again--it's brilliant, and means they can essentially work on their stuff at whatever computer without a fuss.

I mean, yeah, still standing in line for a comp, but a lot less of a pain than carrying around disks and whatnot.

Dying computers suck. You have my sympathies. My computer crashed one day, destroying a 10-page essay that was due two days later.

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2005-02-03 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Dear lord. I went with WG's idea to not spend the money on the external drive, but focus on getting the computer fixed.

Now the hard drive appears to be busted.

Shit. It's all gone now.

Icarus

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2005-02-03 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I've a limited budget (ha, how's that for an understatement?), so went with getting the laptop fixed first.

That appears to have been a mistake.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee... it's a hard drive problem after allllll....

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2005-02-04 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Bookmarks - gone
Software that came with the computer - gone
Digital photos - gone

I can't continue. It hurts too much.

The trouble is that I needed to back up a 6 gig hard drive, not just some documents: entire applications. That can't be done on a key drive.

But it's too late. The hard drive is done for.

Icarus

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2005-02-04 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
My problem is the lack of back-ups. If it's not on my website, I don't have a copy.

Icarus

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2005-02-04 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I'm missing software. And digital photos of the guru in femme, and, and... All that's been saved is the fics. I'm only working part-time, and that's minimal, there's no room or money in the budget for this issue. Faced with buying an external drive or paying for repairs, I paid for the repairs.

What happened? The laptop came back to me in worse shape than before, and the hard drive is a goner.

Icarus

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2005-02-04 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Only my stories. Nothing else. If it's not on my website, it's not backed up.

Which, by the way, includes Microsoft Word. No back up.

Jesus.

Yeah. It's been down for a week now, and the computer problems are just piling up.

Owwwwwww. I'm truly sorry, that hurts to even imagine.

That's so bitter. No chance of putting the harddisc into a different computer to get access to the data? That worked when my last computer broke down.
