Hurricane Sandy

Picking up the pieces from Hurricane Sandy. Maryland only caught skirts of it.

The wind has dropped and the bird feeders back up. Birds are dancing from the branches, to the feeders, to the branches, back to the feeders.

It started with some heavy rain yesterday morning turning into blustery wind and ongoing sprinkling. I loaded up with goodies, and largely expected scary winds, snuggly-scared cats hiding under the couch -- and a power outage. Because there's always a power outage. I live in the area where the customer relations person for PEPCO said on the air, "We don't consider a power outage an emergency." *two thumbs up*

The dramatic moment was a last minute white-knuckled drive through windblown rain yesterday afternoon. (Friends called me intrepid. I cursed my poor scheduling. I didn't have to be out there if I had just thought.) A hurricane looks like the rain version of a blizzard. Same wind, same blowing and spattering, but it's rain instead of snow billowing and swirling across the road.

The biggest hazard was flooding in this area. A number of people two counties over had to be rescued by boat. Here we got about, I think, ten inches of rain.

PEPCO actually came through for us this time. *two non-sarcastic thumbs up* The wind roared in the forest like some angry ghost, but the power only flickered a few times. I stayed up too late. The cats only snoozed. "Hurricane? What hurricane? We're warm and dry."

Now to sample that pepper goat cheese I bought for the occasion... though I have to leave for work in about 10 minutes and I'm still not dressed....

Glad you got through it okay! Flooding would have been terrible for you :( The observation about driving in the rain was interesting. I've driven in a local downburst before (and waited it out under an overpass,) but never with the wind pushing it around laterally at those volumes.

Very glad to read that you & the birds made it through OK, & that the cats' nap schedules weren't disturbed. ;-) I really enjoyed reading your descriptions of the wind & rain. How was the pepper goat cheese? Sounds rather yummy....
