Finally found that Fanfic Hate thread

So I found at long last that fanfic hate thread.

Hee.

This is probably not what its creators intended.

Hah, that's greatness. On another topic, how's the starter kit going? I was thinking of some shorter fics that might be a possibilies, but was wondering if there were any particular pairings you were looking for (I know there was a Sirius/Harry I had thought of, I just need to find the link). Let me know and I can find some stuff for you.

Moving, but really short one shots. Almost everything recommended was a mega-fic.

Actually I'm better off on the rare pairs than the big Harry/DRaco and Snape pairings.

Let me get back to you tomorrow with the list. :D

Thank you!

Not what they intended but....

Take a bow my lady!

Seriously the only good I can see from Fanfic Hate is the knowledge that you don't have to like every fic that people squeal over and you probably are not the only one who didn't like it. After that you don't have to waste your time there. It is better to spend the time finding fic that you do like.

I actually scanned it for my stuff to see if there was any critical feedback I should listen to -- when I didn't find, I added my own. ;)

I like your attitude.

You? Are damn funny.

*giggles* One of the reasons I love you the most: You have NO problem doing that to yourself. *hugs*

Heh. The name Icarus is to remind me not to get cocky. ;)

Magnum P.I. was me: "Ron has a tendency to sound like an American P.I."

I thought it was a pretty nice review I left, though :o)

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2004-07-15 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
It was! That's why I listened. You are right, you know. I never noticed it. But the string of "Ron Weasley, private eye" Ron/Draco fics are my fault. Honest, it was an original idea at the time.

'And why. Do. The Dark Arts not. Show up. Until. Chapter 23 or thereabouts?'

LOL. I was seriously wondering about that at the time that I was reading it...
Not that I cared anyway-was too busy being distracted by the Harry/Snape. I still can't believe you made me like it...

You are truly evil :b

what's this thread?

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2004-07-15 08:52 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, it's not the usual fanfic author-bashing (which get personal in a way that's so ridiculous since we don't know each other in person), but rather a community dedicated to bashing fanfics that people don't like. Especially those that are well-known and much praised.

Some of the critiques/complaints are so vague as to be useless ("all Harry/Snape fics!") but others are pretty specific: "most of the characters are just orig characters with canon character names attached."

After I saw that I started scanning for own stuff, because, hey, that's pretty helpful. So I started scanning for my own stuff (heart in mouth but also ready to be brave and honest). But alas, it turns no one bothered with my fics.

Alas? Well, I suppose, in a way. I always hope people will be honest enough in their reviews, and will tell me straight to my face. But most people don't bother to review, and apart from a few flames (I got one reply that started "You made them GAY? That's disgusting! How could you do that?!" and pretty much continued in the same way), most people simply say that they like it or it was cute or funny or angsty or whatever, and leave it at that. No real criticism, nothing that can give you new insight and can help you improve. Some few do. I suppose these are the ones who want the same in return. These are the best reviewers. But as there are so few, I can see the point of a thread like this.

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2004-07-15 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)
The intention of the thread is vitriol, but a smart writer will listen to intelligent vitriol, if it's specific.

Bows to you for doing that. Maybe I should follow your example and post about my fics in there as well. I'm scared of the first three chapters of my WIP. Not to mention my one-shots.

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2004-07-15 09:03 am (UTC)(link)
The most useful review I ever received was on ff.net while I was posting Primer to the Dark Arts. "Nine chapters and still no sign of a plot...." Ha! Pah-whang! Talk about a frying pan over your head. I got my act together after that. It's a very different story because of that review.

You're bloody brilliant. (Oh god, see what your influence has wrought? I now quote Ron. *Ron*. The one I really never liked until I read your version of him. I would growl and hiss and deny, but there's no hope of that, is there?)

I think it's time I stopped taking myself too seriously as well. Unfortunately, no one knows me enough in this damn fandom, so I'll have to just mock myself in the anime section instead. Mwhahahahah.
