I've always gotten around format difficulties with Nero. Burn everything to a cd. Save the tracks in the preferred format. Same thing works with iTunes - just burn those stupid m4a tracks to a disc. Toddle the disc to the pc and rip mp3.

Yeah, it would be nice to not have to jump through hoops, but I've gotten used to it.
