Have a look at these gorgeous covers for Out Of Bounds created by teaphile. Which do I choose? The first expresses the jagged edges of the slow-build relationship, but the second has such a clear skating reference and focus on John with established relationship-feel of the latter (as yet unwritten) half of the fic. I love the hands and the jeans of the third, while the fourth is steamy -- and has plenty of room for the title. *is indecisive*

I think the first one's the most powerful, though adding title text will be tricky. The second one has the same feel as the cover of every hip urban post-Sex and the City romance I've seen in a feature display at B. Dalton's.

I'd be inclined to go with the last one... assuming you ever get to putting more R-rated bits in there. Otherwise it wouldn't make sense, so I'd be inclined to go with the second one. It's nice and bright, so I like it. I assume the title will be added and such?

I'm going to be weird and say I like the fourth. It has the UST, the obsession, the coach-and-skater dynamic, and I really like the framing. Something about the colors in the second one bother me.

I think I prefer the first one (Ice! skate! profiles! half-open mouth! YAY), but each has its merits... The fourth one is great to write a title in and is hot (although the heads & chest don't really fit my idea of John & Rodney, and the pants of the skating guy arent't tight enough!), the third is just peaceful and warm (with a hint of hotness in the lacings!), and I like the skating guy on the second one but the position of the arms of the guy in green are justt a bit off to me...
You can still use all of them all through the fic, of course ;-)
And, finally, my opinion isn't worth much since I'm waiting for this fic to be finished before reading it, so... I only know it'sn ice-skating AU so far ;-)

Oh, your opinion of art is always valuable, whether you've read the story or not. Great observations, and I agree, I'm leaning towards the first one.
