FanLib requests ff.net passwords.

News Item: [livejournal.com profile] scarah2 let me know that FanLib requests your ff.net password and email to upload stories. I set up an account and checked this out.

It's true.

This is a violation of basic internet security. I don't know the security and bandwidth implications for fanfiction.net.

FanFiction.net has posted the following notice: "May 22nd, 2007 -- The login process has been enhanced to prevent 'bots' from attempting to access your accounts. Please note to never share your email and password combination with anyone."

If FanLib wasn't evil *before*, now it really is. You're right, that's gotta be a violation of something.

Thanks for posting this, btw, and for doing all that research in your other post. You really *are* doing a community service and you should be given a medal.

I think I shall have to send my personal zombie army after FanLib.com now. *sigh*. I didn't want to come to this, but they're just asking to have their eyeballs eaten by a vicious horde of the undead. *tsk tsk*

Although is it wrong that my second thought was a snickering: "Oh noes! Eleventy-one! If FanLib gets a hold of those ff.net passwords, it could be a disaster. It's like a thousand Mary Sues cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced!"

Unbelievable.

It mystifies me what they wish to achieve with this. Have they achieved anything with their site???

Oh, good God. It just gets worse the longer I look at this site.

I went and signed on for my penname. I don't want anyone posting with my penname at all. Makes me wonder, though, how many people have signed up but will never post there.

/continues to be utterly boggled by FanLib/

so they want your info to upload stories? i suppose it's disguised as an easy way to do uploads, but what's to keep them from getting into your account?

the whole 'it's ours while it's posted, but reverts back to you if you remove the story' becames a bit unvalidated since they now have access to any stories you have on ff.net and they could concievably snag any they wanted

not to mention if any copyright violations/C&D orders, etc crop up, they could also say 'btw, so-n-so has other stories here'

what depths are they going to sink to next?

oh, and i'll be waiting for the statement denying that they ever requested this info....

Seriously, what next? Are they going to start soliciting Interview with the Vampire fanfic and turn over the writers' personal information to Anne Rice?

huh, I was wondering why the new login security measures had been added. Thanks for the info.

My god could they suck anymore? I am actually curious about that, from a scientific standpoint. I am sure they will go boldly and proudly into yet undiscovered realms of serious suckage(the totally not fun type - which hey, what a waste when you've got so much).

What? Do they want to copy all their registered users' fics from ff.net to their own site but don't know which ones to take without that? Although even then it doesn't make any sense, because then they would only need your username, not login information... Gah, I'm not even making any sense myself, maybe I should just go to sleep...
