Myanmar monks lead protests.
Myanmar has imposed curfews on protesting monks.
This week, Buddhist monks have led protests of over 100,000 people. The protests were sparked by Myanmar increasing the cost of fuel 500%. (Myanmar is an oil-producing nation but very poor which spends a staggering amount on its military.)
Myanmar allowed the monks' protests until now for fear of provoking an outcry in this Buddhist majority country. Monks have peacefully demonstrated, chanting prayers and refusing offerings from the military with their begging bowls turned over -- a symbol for boycott in Myanmar.
Assemblies of more than five people have now been forbidden. Protesters have said they will defy the crackdown tomorrow.
