Yuletide... do I do it?

[livejournal.com profile] yuletide. Should I?

There is only one micro fandom where I desperately, desperately want fic.

If C. J. Cherryh's Cyteen trilogy weren't written back in the 80s there so would be a fandom.

The gay is canon, folks Justin admits it. And it has more angst than you can shake a stick at. And non-con and dub-con (with the Justin Warrick/Grant Warrick). Plus there's the quasi-incest, too. And! They're being monitored 24/7 and they know it. Oh, the voyeurism! The unwilling exhibitionism! The crushing politics, and the question of Grant's rights and choices, and the intense relationship between these two where they cling --

-- okay. We've established that I want this micro fandom.

But I'm supposed to make more than one request.

Uhh... Well. Boston Legal deserves a fandom. No show that makes it this easy to slash should be without one. And BL is destined for crackfic.

Then a third option...? I could do some Lackey Herald-Mage stuff, though I'm not excited about it. Vanyel/Tylendel deserve more (highly explicit) time together.

Or else -- this would be fun -- Patricia McKillip's Riddlemaster series. I could easily slash Rood of An with anyone. Naked, drunken, calmly furious riddlemaster, anyone?

Should I do this? I have a plate full of Out Of Bounds, and I've all these SPN stories just sitting there and -- and --

ETA: Oh. It seems there's no Riddlemaster option, nor do we have Mercedes Lackey. Wot? No Lackey? Why on earth not?

ETA, fussing about this some more: Fandoms I would like to read, even if I don't think I could pull it off:

- Thoughtcrimes (Flanigan's character is adorable)
- RPF - SGA (I like how Flanigan is a bit of a bitch. Get a new handle... jeeze, Flan.)
- Patricia A. McKillip - Riddlemaster (I could put this in as my fourth choice and take a chance that a McKillip fan might know the Riddlemaster series)
- Master and Commander - Movie (I still need to read the books, though they come highly recommended, but these two were so slashable)
- Fritz Leiber - Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser (Some classic fantasy)
- Bourne Identity (This I think would be very interesting to slash. The character is so vulnerable and dangerous.)
- First Monday (Again with the adorableness of the Flanigan character, though mostly, I like what a self-righteous, closeted, political, conniving bastard he is.)
- Hitchhiker's Guide (Anyone who can pull it off has my utmost respect.)

Well. It's that I really want to write Cyteen Jordan/Grant slash, but don't have a prayer of every finding anyone to read it outside of Yuletide.

Possibly true (although I would perhaps prod the flist and hint that it's Christmas soon, and you've been Naughty In The Right Way all year).

It's just that you have no guarantee your assigned writer will write that and not one of your other mandatory prompts. (Of course, my agenda is obvious, as I am not that interested in Yuletide.)

[identity profile] droolfangrrl.livejournal.com 2007-10-17 11:36 am (UTC)(link)
I would!

I've got all her stuff.

I even met her at a Con! :D

Cherryh that is

[identity profile] ursulakohl.livejournal.com 2007-10-17 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
There are a bunch of Cherryh fandom requests, so you could plausibly do all Cherryh, all the time.

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2007-10-17 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Jordan/Grant, really? Though, I can totally see it.

There are certain points where I wondered if the story was going to take that turn. Warrick family pyscho-sexual dynamics are beyond fucked.

What's your idea, if you don't mind me asking?

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2007-10-17 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooops. I meant Justin/Grant, of course. :D

As for the idea... I think it's probably pretty obvious.

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2007-10-18 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Well yeah NOW it's obvious. ;-)

[identity profile] slybrarian.livejournal.com 2007-10-18 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
If you were to write Cyteen fic - hell, any Cherryh fic at all - I would love you forever. It really is too bad that there doesn't seem to be a fandom for it.

Hmmm. *wanders off to ponder writing weird John-as-Mazianni-jump-pilot fic for the flashfic challenge*

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2007-10-18 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
John-as-Mazianni-jump-pilot...

Whoa. Now that sounds cool. :D

Lackey's publishers, or Lackey, try to control fan fiction by allowing it, but only in a controlled environment sponsored by the publishers, if I recall correctly.

Boston Legal isn't a major fan fiction thing because it's already too self-consciously crackfic already. People generally want to write something that is missing, you know?

If you get Rood of An fiction, I want to know, so very, very much! I'm thinking he'd go really, really well with the guy who sends Raederle the flute, with some stray student, with one (or more) of the Morgol's guard, with some stray fishing person at the bar, with Tristan in ten years' time, with Lyra after the Herun lordling can't quite handle her shellshock....

*Man* I wish McKillip had written more in this world.

[identity profile] killerbeautiful.livejournal.com 2007-10-17 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
you and me both..... that trilogy is SO brilliant.

[identity profile] mkcs.livejournal.com 2007-10-17 09:49 am (UTC)(link)
And I completely missed out the idea of stories about Rood's feelings for the Starbearer.

[identity profile] moiety-tx.livejournal.com 2007-10-17 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
So much love for Riddlemaster. So not a fic writer myself. I figure Raederle/Lyra would be so, so easy. Or Ymriscest. Yeah.

[identity profile] killerbeautiful.livejournal.com 2007-10-17 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
ditto to both! ack. and morgon's brother whose name is totally escaping me at this moment needs some love too. and tristan/lyra would also be easy. and i would love like a history fic of the morgol/deth set like, a few hundred years back from the trilogy....

and for the record there's always [livejournal.com profile] magicnations for posting any fantasy fandom fic that doesn't have its own fandom. :) i'd love to see some riddlemaster fic there.

[identity profile] pxr5.livejournal.com 2007-10-17 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
OOC, would that be Bourne Identity slash for movie or book?

[identity profile] pxr5.livejournal.com 2007-10-17 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
For book, I always thought Bourne/Carlos would be fascinating (talk about the power games!), but was wondering what other pairings you saw?

[identity profile] pxr5.livejournal.com 2007-10-19 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
...and on random notes, anything good and fannish to do while in the seattle area? I'm coming out that way next week for a work conference...

(any really good bookshops or music shops?)

[identity profile] kagyakusha.livejournal.com 2007-10-17 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Mercedes Lackey fanfiction has too many rules because she and her publishers are control freaks.

[identity profile] lttledvl.livejournal.com 2007-10-18 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Could you point me to where this is at? I had no idea and I was thinking of doing a xover with some lackey stuff, but maybe I won't after all...

Thanks much!

[identity profile] kagyakusha.livejournal.com 2007-10-18 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't bother if I were you...
Here's SOME of the "rules" -- which include but are NOT LIMITED TO:
No internet fanfiction
All Lackey fanfiction must be published only in an approved fanzine
All Lackey fanfiction requires a RELEASE FORM and a submission of said fanfiction
There's also a whole spiel (somewhere -- can't find it right now but I used to belong to the Australian newsletter so I remember being incredulous of it) about exactly which time frame you're allowed to write in and what alternate reality must be happening, and also original characters ONLY!

Queen's Own Fanfiction Rules (http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qofanfic.htm)

Holy Crap!

[identity profile] lttledvl.livejournal.com 2007-10-18 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeesh; I think I shall pass - no little AU xover ficlets from me then *pouts*

The 'official' word...

[identity profile] lttledvl.livejournal.com 2007-10-18 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh! for any other of icarus's flist 'snoopers' (since I like to read other people's comments) and who may have an interest in this Lackey discussion...

I did some digging on her offical webpage and found THE answer under the Q&A:

copied from http://mercedeslackey.com/

Q: Please don't flame me for this! My friend and I just created a Hawkbrother fanclub that has our fanfiction on it (our fanfiction is not published anywhere except online). We honestly didn't know that all fanfiction needed a release form until just recently, and we were told that the release form doesn't have anything to do with web fanfiction. So we wanted to know whether you permitted web fanfiction or not and, if so, what sort of legalities we need to go through. Also, we'd like to know if you permit unofficial webrings (my friend and I also began a mini-ring. It's actually just a "Links" page, but we thought we'd give it a fancier name). If you do not permit any of these online activities, my friend and I will prompty shut down the site. We're very sorry for the inconvenience.

A: We don't allow online fanfiction or online games, MUDs, MUCKs or MUSHs; anything else is fine.

And there you have it...

Re: The 'official' word...

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2007-10-19 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
This makes me want to write explicit Vanyel/Tylendel fic.

Re: The 'official' word...

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2007-10-19 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I say crossover's don't count. There's this issue of enforcability -- as in, unless you have a big site like ff.net or Yuletide, this policy can't be enforced at all. Plus, if it's a crossover....

alksfjdlkgjsdlfjksdlfk if you requested rood/morgon and got it i would WORSHIP you. i've always wanted a fandom for that trilogy but i always thought i was the only person in teh world who'd ever READ it. lol!

*coughs politely*

Why, I just recently read Cyteen...

[identity profile] roaringmice.livejournal.com 2007-10-17 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
And I've just ordered it. Thanks for the recc. I hadn't read it, but I'd heard of it, and had been meaning to pick it up... eventually.

[identity profile] dkwilliams.livejournal.com 2007-10-17 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
You should do it! It's fun! And even if your writer doesn't pick your prompt to write to, the prompts are available for those who want to write NYR stories throughout the year, so if you have an interesting prompt, you have the hope of someone picking that up and writing it later. As for being on the writing end, that's really fun to do and all you're committed to writing is the fandom and the characters requested, so you don't have to follow their prompt. I'm doing it for the second time, and I can't wait to get my assignment.

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2007-10-17 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I've read some Cyteen fic and it was... decent. The thing about Cherryh is that her stuff has all the basic building blocks of a good fandom, but the density and scale of it seems to be resistant to fic. You *could* write codas and missing scenes, but... I don't know, it seems a more daunting task than say, writing SGA.

[identity profile] fer-de-lance.livejournal.com 2007-10-18 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
No Lackey? Why on earth not?

I suspect it's because she's pretty anti-fanfic. I think there have been some Rice-esque instances of fans being told to take stuff down/having legal threats made against them. (I am not sure of this, or at least, not sure what level of discouragement was used; I outgrew Lackey before I discovered internet fandom.) Still, that owuld be my guess -- either that Lackey fans know about the "no fanfic" thing and don't want attention drawn to Yuletide, or else Yuletide knows and is avoiding Lackey's various universes.

[identity profile] tingler.livejournal.com 2007-10-18 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Thoughtcrimes (Flanigan's character is adorable)

He so is! I wanted to take him home and keep him. But I'm still glad we got SGA, instead. "Thoughtcrimes" would have been a difficult premise to keep fresh, I'm thinking. I've read a couple of good TC fanfics, though.

- RPF - SGA (I like how Flanigan is a bit of a bitch. Get a new handle... jeeze, Flan.)

Have you seen the pics of JF at the recent Aussie con? He's wearing this almost-bizarre red-checked-cowboyish shirt and is just insanely hot in it. And there's one where he's leaning over Connor Trineer's shoulder whispering to him that is extremely interesting.

Fritz Leiber - Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser (Some classic fantasy)

Hey, I've read this! It was almost accidental and I'm always surprised to see someone reference it. One of the weirdest books I've ever read, but it was cool, too.

- First Monday (Again with the adorableness of the Flanigan character, though mostly, I like what a self-righteous, closeted, political, conniving bastard he is.)

- Bourne Identity (This I think would be very interesting to slash. The character is so vulnerable and dangerous.)

Vulnerable and dangerous. The best one-two punch of all slashableness. (and, not so coincidentally, describes John Sheppard so well!) I recently read an SG-1 AU with Daniel as the Bourne character and Mitchell in the "girl" role. It wasn't bad. I could try and find it if you like.

Ah, First Monday. I so wanted to like that show--James Garner! Joe Montegna! *Sally Fuckin Fields*! And (unbeknownst to me at the time, but I remember his character) JF! I wanted to like it so much and it was so awful. There are some fanfics that have the Julian character meeting up with DH's character from "Boa Vs. Python" (no, for reals). Come to think of it, I think there are some with DH's character from BvP meeting up with JF's TC character. (What? I only read a couple.)

[identity profile] leni-jess.livejournal.com 2007-10-18 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
I have actually read some Justin/Grant fanfic, but blessed if I know where. I didn't copy it to my hard disk... which suggests I didn't think too well of it. Now, you'd do it well.

But if you did McKillip's Riddlemasterverse (not just a drabble), I'd really love you!

I can't nerve myself up to do Yuletide (terrified of what I might be asked to write!), but I scan through the output most carefully each year; there's some really superior stuff.

Go on, be a devil and do some!

If you do decide to do yuletide, good luck to you! I was considering it, but I doubt I can handle both Yuletide and NaNo. (and I really want to give nano a good effort so I'm planning a bit of a fanfic hiatius for the next month...)
