Drabble number four? I think it is. This one is for [livejournal.com profile] haku_kaen, who requested fluffy Harry/Percy, G through PG-13. I'm open for suggestions on the name. Nothing's jumping out at me for the moment.

Christmas Fluff
by Icarus

Christmas at the Burrow was even better than Hogwarts, Harry thought as he helped Ron with the dishes, drying a plate with a jet of hot air. The house smelled of gingerbread and pine, and the decorations were a little battered, but nonetheless cheerful.

It seemed every time Harry turned a corner, someone was whispering and wrapping -- walking into a pair of flying scissors was a definite hazard. The strings of singing holly-lights were slightly off-key, but they made up for it with enthusiasm. They really didn't match unfortunately. One in the sitting room chirped 'We Wish You A Happy Christmas,' while the kitchen set hummed a dismal 'O Come All Ye Faithful.' Ron put his fingers in his ears. But Harry rather liked them.

Besides, he was in a great mood, even for Christmas.

All through dinner Percy had carefully not looked at him, and when someone tries not to look at you, they end up glancing over quite a lot. Plus, he'd dropped his fork, forgot to put his napkin in his lap and poured gravy all over it, and then didn't hear anybody ask him to pass the salt. When they both reached for it at once, their hands had met over the table. Percy could turn as red as his hair.

Harry wiped away a little smile. He felt the weight of a gaze on him, and knew without turning around who it was.

"Harry…" Percy cleared his throat. "Do you need a -- need some help there?"

"Nah, we've got it," Ron said.

Shit. But it was probably better they didn't act like this in front of Ron. Even Ron would get suspicious eventually. Harry turned and shrugged with a helpless gesture.

Percy hovered in the doorway, glanced about carefully, and mouthed: "Later."

Harry said aloud, "I suppose we have it," as he nodded emphatically. His heart raced.

"You know, Harry," Ron observed, glancing after his brother. "Percy's been acting weird all night."

Yeah, it was probably a good thing Percy didn't help with the dishes. Harry waited on pins and needles for bedtime.

~*~*~

But it was really late before Ron was finally asleep, the covers rising and falling steadily. Harry crept along the dark hall past Fred and George's room and stood outside Percy's door. It occurred to him that he'd never even been in here before. He couldn't exactly knock.

"Psst. Percy…" he whispered. There wasn't a sound.

Harry glanced up and down the empty hall, the cheerful colours of the hand-woven rugs and homey pictures gone to tones of blue-grey in the dark. He decided he was invited so therefore… he turned the knob, which gave an excruciatingly loud click, and edged into Percy's room.

It was very dark, and it took Harry's eyes a moment to adjust. He had an impression of extreme neatness, a stark contrast to the clutter of Ron's room, and there Percy was, curled up around his pillow…

…fast asleep.

Finis.

*loves* Mmmm... you didn't write it for me, but you might as well have. *happy sigh*

*grins* Percy forever. Next: Wired Lizard's Percy/Snape.

Awwww. I'm just in love with this Percy. He's just adorable. And Ron's cluelessness is just so endearing as well.

Your Harry/Percy fluffiness is so absolutely cute.

I love Weasleys in general, but Percy is a personal favourite.

Awwww. What utterly cuteness.

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2003-09-15 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it seems I can do cute from time to time. I think it's now time for something brutal. ;)

Good-o!

[identity profile] haku-kaen.livejournal.com 2003-09-13 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, that's just as fluffy as I could possibly have hoped for. I still have the big ol' smile on my face that first showed up at the flying scissors line (and accompanying mental image) and kept growing throughout.

I love how absolutely perfectly fumbly the two of them are around each other, even as they're smart enough to try their best to hide it. I laughed at Ron's cluelessness, but am glad that you chose not to show how anyone else in the family reacted to their acting odd. This way I can imagine that they pulled it off if I want to, or that they're completely transparent to all the older people and Arthur and Molly are exchanging knowing glances while Bill's at the other end of the table snickering into his napkin at Percy's blushing after his hand brushed Harry's.

I laughed like a fool at the ending. Oh, poor poor Harry. I was not expecting that, but I think it's a perfect fit for the overall fluffy mood of the ficlet.

*runs off giggling*

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2003-09-15 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, you liked the scissors! Wonderful -- that just popped out of nowhere as I was cranking this out. I had to edit out the ribbon strangle-hazard, since I was just barely on track as it was.

I never even considered the family's reactions, to tell you the truth. Which I think means I was really identifying with the two of them, because I don't think they believe anyone's caught on.

In truth, I suspect Molly has rose-coloured glasses where Percy is concerned (this is a GoF era fic), Arthur's a little myopic. If anyone's gonna catch on, it's going to be Percy's brothers -- probably the older ones. The twins and Ron have pretty 'set-in-stone' images of their brother, and being gay is just not boring enough for him.

For some unknown reason, I really love your Harry/Percy, especially the Harry/Percy fluff.

Perhaps, it's just that they both deserve a little happiness.

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2003-09-15 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
...it's just that they both deserve a little happiness.

I couldn't agree more. They are such a surprisingly sweet combination.

Lovely! Percy and Harry are surprisingly cute together. I like Percy's awkwardness.

And I hope Harry woke Percy up...

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2003-09-15 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
This is terrible but -- Harry didn't wake Percy up! They didn't know each other well enough for that, and Harry was nervous even about stepping into Percy's room.

Not to worry, they followed up later. "Where were you?" -- "You were asleep!" -- "No I wasn't." -- "You were!"

*They break off whispered conversation as Charlie shambles into kitchen. Staggers off.*

"You were too asleep! Anyhow, Ron was awake till nearly one o'clock."

"Oh, I see. How about tonight then?"

*They break off conversation again. Percy pretends to read The Daily Prophet (upside-down), Harry looks very interested in something outside the window, while the twins bumble down the stairs, grab some food, and disappear.*

"It'd better be tonight. It's my last night here."

Oh, this is better than Harry waking Percy! I quite like the idea of them suffering through this interrupted conversation and a long day of waiting. Thanks so much!

[identity profile] mark356.livejournal.com 2003-09-15 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's adorable! I feel that in your narrative you've really found your voice; it's not JKR, and it's not all rapid-fire description either, but its pacing is perfect, and very concisely tells everything you need to tell us. This is so short it's almost all detail, but even so, I like the little details like the holly singing enthusiastically off-key, or the excruciatingly loud click. And your Harry and Percy are perfect; both of them are as awkward as I am, but at least they recognize their feelings for each other, in their own way. I feel so bad for Harry at the end, since he really wanted to do interesting things with Percy, but by the time he could, Percy was asleep! (I would want to schnoogle him, except that he really wants to schnoogle Percy instead.) But despite the sad ending, this is fluff, in that by the end, Harry recognizes his desire to schnoogle Percy and has a slightly better idea of how to go about it. This is another terrific ficlet, and I'm sorry that I didn't give feedback like this on your fabulous RS/Hr piece!

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2003-09-15 09:30 am (UTC)(link)
Are you kidding? You gave fabulous feedback on the 'Bug' fic. You raised the bar so high, the next person who just (originally) said "gosh, thanks, see ya" left me opening and closing my mouth like a fish. Plus at the time I was pretty bummed out because I had to shit-can my first chapter of Snape Manor. Read it to Wilderness Guru, and he agreed with my assessment.

You can wait back in Ron's room "shhh. Harry, Ron'll sleep through anything.." :D

[identity profile] ragnhildholm.livejournal.com 2003-09-15 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
Veeeery nice... Yes, indeed. Percy's awkwardness is fantastic. And the ending is daring, not typical, and it works. Well done.

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2003-09-15 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I went back and forth about that ending. The story wanted to end there, though I originally had something else in mind. Finally I decided this was funnier (and more real).

Icarus

[identity profile] ragnhildholm.livejournal.com 2003-09-16 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I think you made the right decision. It is more realistic this way, and originality is really something to look out for.

I love your drabbles. Ron/Harry, please, if you feel like it. It's a pairing I've never been 100% comfortable with, and I think you're the one to convince me! So, a challenge! R (or below), please...

Re: Request

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2003-09-15 12:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, but I may be a while. Almost 20 people have asked for drabbles, which, if I only do one a day, is nearly three weeks worth.

In the meantime, gosh, I've done a lot of Harry/Ron Here (http://home.earthlink.net/~dinkbird/id3.html#Harry/Ron). Cassandra Claire does not like Ron at all and is the ultimate Harry/Draco shipper, but she did go for the Harry/Ron dynamic (re. mess) in Primer to the Dark Arts (http://www.schnoogle.com/authorLinks/Icarus). 'Guy Talk' is irreverent, and 'An Irresistible Photo' is cute, but 'Primer' and 'Hagrid's Hut' really embody my picture of Harry and Ron together.

Ah hell, who could resist? But I'm not sure a drabble will convince you, since this pairing really does need development and a slow build. I took advantage of this though, to write my first OotP compliant fic.

Here you go. But do read Primer, Guy Talk or one of my GoF Harry/Ron fics. They're more stable than this.

It Was All Right (http://www.livejournal.com/users/icarusancalion/88823.html).
