John's beater from Out Of Bounds. Joe Flanigan posed mostly nude?

WG and I have come to a truce on John's car in Out Of Bounds.

I thought I found John's car from Out Of Bounds.

The 1978 Chevy Caprice, which he bought in 1989, just after he graduated high school:

[livejournal.com profile] wildernessguru says, "No way does John drive that. No guy would drive that land yacht."

"Okay," I asked him, "So what does he drive?"

He suggested a Dodge Dart. I told him that John's car has to have a back seat, and the Dart's back seat is way too small. I pointed out that John has had this car forever. It spends most of the story in various states of disrepair. (Mostly the heat's broken. In Canada.) He said, "Whatever, no way would John drive that."

Sigh. It's not like John can afford a muscle car or anything sporty. I kept hunting.

After an evening spent cruising cars in the Lemon-ade Guide, I showed [livejournal.com profile] wildernessguru the following. WG's cool with the 1980 Chevy Caprice Classic although John's obviously wouldn't be black (his is burgundy) or in mint condition like this one:

"More of a beater," he said, but he agreed with this choice.

I said, "You mean like this?"

"Yeah," he said.

We'll not tell him that's another photo of the original car, or that the only difference between the first and second car was the model year. *snickers*

Did you know about Joe Flanigan posing mostly nude for About Face? This is the first I'd heard of the project.

He looks both vulnerable, uncomfortable, and intense. Off-balance. It's a very interesting photo for more reasons than the obvious.

Thank you for posting the link to the About Face project. Good lord, that man's eyes are mesmerizing. I just wish live journal allowed larger icons so that we could see them. (I snagged that photo too and I've a feeling we won't be the only ones.)

his choices suggest that he's looking a little deeper, or his concept of beauty is well-rounded.

Mostly, yes. I do not, for the life of me, know why one would add Taylor Kitsch of Friday Night Lights fame to the list, as I don't think he's either good-looking or interesting and complex in any way--Ian Somerhalder may have far less depth than Joe, but boy, the surface sure is purdy & ;-). But yeah: That's just what I think.

In general, though, I agree.

I found this in google last night while looking for photos of younger Joe for my descriptions in Out Of Bounds. The fandom hive mind is an amazing thing. Turns out [info]winterhive and [info]sheafrotherdon found it at the same time.

Well, there ARE a couple thousand of us. Who scout the net for Joe. & ;-)

he was a professional model before he entered acting so I suspect he's got a little more experience with being treated as ~incidental~ or as a ~meat model~

That makes sense, yes.

I don't expect that JF has/had that kind of experience hence his ~real~ and ~almost haunted~ look...

It makes this shot of his face, his reaction much more genuine. I love that.

Where are these top three pics? I couldn't find them on the About Face page itself.

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-03-30 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
If you look at the list of galleries, there are three of them, each opening with a different pic. One opens with Joe Flanigan, the 1st opens with Kevin Bacon, and the other opens with someone I don't know. All three of those photos are almost... strange.

[identity profile] monanotlisa.livejournal.com 2008-03-30 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
They ARE. Although for the first one, that's most likely because Kevin Bacon is a bit strange per se. The second one I don't know; he's gorgeous, though, if far less interesting than Joe.

(And now I undestand--I chose the html version of the site first, which leads you directly to the galleries: no preview photo.)

Pretty much everyone there is less interesting than Joe. Or that could be me.

I love these two photos (posted for no reason whatsoever):

Must suppress flailing. Must. Suppress.

But: ♥. So much.

[identity profile] bruinsfan.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, I think that particular style of photography may be much more flattering to Joe with his quirky slightly-weathered good looks and mussed hair than it is to the chisel featured and slick-haired Abercrombie & Fitch types that make up the bulk of the models. (I mean, Eric Winter looks like warmed-over crap in his photo, yet from his TV work I'd rate him as a "10". See Exhibit A (http://i23.tinypic.com/33u9ana.jpg).)

Now that I consider it, am I alone in finding Joe Flanigan much hotter than John Sheppard? Maybe it's that Sheppard always seems to be smirking or frowning...

I like your icon! If it were me, I might not use such a recognizably copyrighted image, though. LJ has been getting rather crabby about this in the macro communities. Just a thought.

That said, I really do like your icon! SUCH a good pic of him.

[identity profile] sulien77.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
True, they probably wouldn't care that I credited the photographer in the comments section of the user icons. :-p Eh, well, I'll risk it! If you're willing to risk the wrath of LJ, the icon is snaggable, just credit the photo to John Russo and give the link to the project site in the comments.

Good lord, his smile in that second photo...I can't help but get a big sappy grin on my face looking at his smile like that. The man might not be as pretty or handsome by the current standards of such things as other actors and models, but he is damn pretty in my book.

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
I think LJ is just hating the cat macros in general, given how many were flung at them over the last year.

Or two tall, bulky guys for that matter. :)

My mom had a 1983(?) Chevy Caprice, and it was a standard family sedan with a powerful enough engine that it could be souped up into a sportscar with a little effort. My stepdad had one in the 60s that had the engine blueprinted that he used for drag racing.

It was a tough car, reasonably reliable and easy to maintain, if "slushy" in the suspension, with lousy gas mileage (fortunately Out Of Bounds is set when gas was still $1.50 a gallon). I'm betting it was probably the family car given to John (okay, sold to him for tiny amount) after he graduated. He's kept it running since.

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
And the little hunch to his shoulders like he was caught being a tad naughty. :)

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm thinking Russo must have waited, and waited, and waited, and waited before he snapped that phoauirho--damn, it's hard to type with the cat walking all over the keyboard. What does he want. He's been fed....

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't see a lot of body confidence in that photo.

Which I like about him.

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I made less than minimum wage for babysitting, but my first job was minimum wage, definitely. John makes more than minimum wage for the deliveries, for sure. He's always gone for jobs that pay him the maximum for the minimum amount of time (UPS is union work). But anyway, gas was cheap in 1999.

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I find Joe Flanigan more interesting than John Sheppard, but that's because I know a lot less about Joe. *smirks*

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
How long has this photo been out there? It says it was for an event in July 2007, but I know it's never turned up in any of the searches I've run.

Wasn't advertised on GateWorld or somesuch either, we'd know. Hmm. Maybe Russo has had it put up only now, for copyright or other IP reasons?

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I've looked for the book, and I don't see it published anywhere. There seems to be just the red carpet event in August 2007. Maybe he lost his publisher? Or one of his celebrities didn't like his photo? Or they're just hopelessly behind schedule.

Please respect the power of the word."Did you know about Joe Flanigan posing mostly nude for About Face?"
I'm surprised that the About Face site hasn't gone down under the weight of rabid fangirls trying to see JF in teh altogether!!! Which he isn't1 *pouts*
But, the photographer has produced startling images. All the faces are sharply in focus, but the bodies are kinda receeding. I'm sure JF should be more hairy than that. His shoulders seem to slope very sharply. Has he been airbrushed? But the expression, now that's something else. Vulnerable. Hmm.
Thanks for posting!

But I said mostly. lol

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-04-21 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm. It's strange ... the effect of having all those handsome men blur together into nonentities. I get a sense of the meaninglessness of beauty.

I'm sure it's unintended.
