Yep. I'm from the north all right, and yes, from the Great Lakes area.

Glad I have a meme to confirm that.

What American accent do you have?
Created by Xavier on Memegen.net

Northern. Whether you have the world famous Inland North accent of the Great Lakes area, or the radio-friendly sound of upstate NY and western New England, your accent is what used to set the standard for American English pronunciation (not much anymore now that the Inland North sounds like it does).

If you are not from the North, you are probably one of the following:
(a) A Southerner who hates Southern accents and tries really hard to "talk right"; or
(b) A New Yorker or New Jerseyan who doesn't have the full accent

Take this quiz now - it's easy!
We're going to start with "cot" and "caught." When you say those words do they sound the same or different?

This makes me wonder. Why do we take quizzes that confirm what we already know?

It says I'm from the North as well...and I am. Just that it's the North of Ireland. Ah well, they can't all be accurate!

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
It's hilarious. WG got pegged as a southern accent, and that's so not true.

[identity profile] bruinsfan.livejournal.com 2008-05-21 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
This one wasn't too accurate for me either. It pegged me as from the Northeast, like Rhode Island or Connecticut. I'm actually from the Mid-South, but my accent sounds Nebraskan.

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this test keeps getting shot down. Heh.

[identity profile] bramble-rose.livejournal.com 2008-05-21 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
They had me at Mary, merry and marry. That's always a dead give-away for Southerners. And, gee, does my I ever sound like ah? Only Every Time AH say it *g*

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 07:58 am (UTC)(link)
I will hereafter hear "bramble rose" with a southern accent. ;)

[identity profile] bramble-rose.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I wanna grow up to be Ann Richards (The Governor, not the Australian actress *g*).

New York City. You are most definitely from New York City. Not New Jersey, not Connecticut. If you are from Jersey then you can probably get into New York City in 10 minutes or less.

Take this quiz now - it's easy!

[identity profile] blackboggart.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Ahaha, same for me. I am amused. :D

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
The credibility of this test is plummeting, man.

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 07:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Well, the test does say it doesn't successfully test for a Pittsburgh accent, so I can imagine what it would do with a foreign accent.

[identity profile] katmaxwell.livejournal.com 2008-05-21 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
These things always crack me up because they're so arbitrary -- we're going to take very specific words and judge your entire accent based on them! Sob. They hurt my linguistics-loving heart.

Also, it told me I was from Minnesota.

Which is lolarious.

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-05-21 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, well. At least it got mine right.

Western. Like Midland, Western is another accent that people consider neutral. So, you might not actually be from the Western half of the country, but you definitely sound like it.

And if you're not from the West, you are probably one of the following:
(a) A Pittsburgher - the quiz can't tell the difference;
(b) Someone from Canada (probably southern Ontario) who doesn't have a Canadian accent;
(c) Someone from northern New England who doesn't have a New England accent; or
(d) Someone from Texas or the Heartland who was born after 1980.
You are definitely not from New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Detroit, the Deep South, etc.</font>

Take this quiz now - it's easy!

No kidding.

[identity profile] tekalynn.livejournal.com 2008-05-21 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
Cot/caught merger here. *wave*

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 07:59 am (UTC)(link)
WG got listed as a southern accent, which... no way.

[identity profile] nathaniel-hp.livejournal.com 2008-05-21 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
For someone with a 'British' accent, i.e. mostly Southern with some Northern elements, plus a sprinkle of Australian, the test result is New York ... Hmm, I don't sound even remotely like a New Yorker, but there you have it.

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. That's the same thing that happened with the Aussies in this test.

[identity profile] seekergeek.livejournal.com 2008-05-21 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently I'm from nowhere. It assigned to me a "Neutral" accent. I'm actually from the Midwest and currently residing in the south. It should have asked me if I said ya'll or not.

[identity profile] tekalynn.livejournal.com 2008-05-21 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
I say "y'all" and even "all y'all" as an adult, because I picked it up from a professor I liked a lot in college. I certainly never said it when I was growing up.

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
Interesting. Have they cancelled eachother out?

[identity profile] seekergeek.livejournal.com 2008-05-23 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
That is a possibility. Another factor may be that I tend to soak up accents that I've been exposed to. I recently went on vacation for a week in Minnesota and by the time I left, I was speaking in the native Minnesota accent, much to my husband's amusement. I've also gone to visit some friends for the weekend in Alabama and come home speaking like them. I even picked up the African-American (Midwest version) accent one time when I spent two weeks at band camp and I was the only white girl in a cabin of 12. That really freaked my grandmother out.

[identity profile] malnpudl.livejournal.com 2008-05-21 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
I got the same result you did, and it's correct. I'm northern Midwest with Great Lakes influence (raised in Ohio, both parents from Chicago). Cool.

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-05-21 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
So far the only accent it gets right is the Great Lakes....

Of course, all these Brits and Aussies are taking the test, and it's not designed to account for their accents. :)

[identity profile] bramble-rose.livejournal.com 2008-05-21 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
It got the Southern correct, also :-) A Southern accent has definte markers.

[identity profile] sinick.livejournal.com 2008-05-21 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I got New York City, which is pretty funny, given that I'm Australian and so is my accent. I was expecting something much more New England-ish.

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-05-21 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder which New York accent they mean. Brooklyn? Manhattan?

[identity profile] sinick.livejournal.com 2008-05-21 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
There's that much difference between them? Wow. Shows how little I know.

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-05-21 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Huge difference between them. The Brooklyn accent is unmistakable.

[identity profile] enname.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
Don't worry, I am Australian and I got NY as well. Although they did specify not Brooklyn.

[identity profile] dingdongdevious.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Sooo, I took the quiz and it said I have a NYC accent . . . and having grown up in Louisiana and Michigan, I don't see how that works, haha. Soooo, I guess in that sense the quiz is telling me something new?

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, well, I guess it doesn't really work all that well. *g*

[identity profile] jeermey66.livejournal.com 2008-05-23 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
I'll check that out!

[identity profile] enname.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
It would appear I am from New York. *snort* Now that is strange, because I swear I am from Australia with a particularly British sounding voice. In fact, I am often mistaken for being English over here with the odd nasal twang.

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-06-04 11:36 am (UTC)(link)
I have a theory.

I have a theory that this test doesn't work very well for: Aussies, Brits, and all other people from outside the US. And also most people in the US as well. :D

[identity profile] enname.livejournal.com 2008-06-05 09:30 am (UTC)(link)
Good grief.

*falls over with the shock*

How... how dare it!

Well, I'm, as always, late. But, in my case, this was hilarious, because I got Southern accent, and I am from South, except, is South America =D

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-06-04 11:35 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, hahahahaha--
