I guess intramural soccer is out.

The CT scan results: WG has a fractured sessamoid. Oh.

It's a soccer player's injury (though he probably got it at work). The fracture hasn't gone all the way through the bone which is why it wasn't clear on the X-ray. It looks like a knife cut across the base of the bone.

The little bone's about the size of a grape or maybe your thumbnail, on the ball of your foot right before the big toe. It's small, but important, because it's a flexor joint with the tendon of the big toe stretched across it.

The tendon kept pushing and sawing over the break which is why -- ow, ow, ow -- it hurt.

The tissue around the tendon had been tenderized and inflamed after months of walking on the fractured bone. Now that he's been off of it for two weeks, the inflammation has gone down.

Well. Kids break bones all the time. They heal. It'll just be a little slower for WG because he's not 12 anymore and it's an extremity.

It's, oh man, wince worthy.

Thank you. And he's huggable. The foot is far out of hugging range. *g*

Aaargh, that sounds painful. In that eye-twisty, shudderinducing kind of way

I hope he gets better soon - please pass on another hug to him!

Thank you, I will. To tell you the truth, the real trouble was from his work and their reaction to his injuries. Once he was off of work, he could focus on just getting better.

Bless him, at least he has a firm diagnosis now. It sounds like he's done well to cope with it at work as long as he did. Please add another hug to the list!

WG says he's been injured more on this job than he was ever injured fighting fires. I think that it's partially age, but mostly the shipyard is rather messy when it comes to safety regulations and conditions.

Owwwwwwwwwww. It's always the tiny things that hurt the most.

*hugs and happy healing thoughts to WG* :)

I had the exact same thing, only on my left foot. I pretty much ignored it until my boyfriend of the time brought home how painful it really was by grabbing me there. My sympathies to WG, and I hope it feels better soon.

when i was 9, i had an extra bone growing in my foot as a bridge between two other bones parallel to each other. it was called a 'tarsal coalition'. that bone bridge broke, and it rubbed, and hurt a lot. so they put me in a cast for 6 weeks to see if it could heal up. but no. i was the tether-ball queen at the time, and that bone certainly didn't heal itself. instead they had to go in and remove the extra bone.
i kinda forgot what my point was, but yeah, foot pain sucks, and taking forever to heal really really sucks..

I'll pass that along to WG. He will sympathize.
