Stories in the works

I'm cruising along on that Lorne/Sheppard what-the-heck-this-is-fun-whee! story I've been writing in comments to [livejournal.com profile] auburnnothenna. Sheppard, naked, pissed off and chasing Lorne down a beach on the Atlantis mainland-? My idea of a good time.

The Lorne/Heightmeyer? Let's not mince words. This story sucks donkey dick. Each attempt to repair it has made it slightly worse. [livejournal.com profile] filenotch, I fear to send it to you, if only because I want no evidence of how badly I can write when I'm writing badly. I am digging a hole in the back yard to hide the bodies. This is not mere writerly neurosis. I have had one beta say, "There are good things about this story" (the ever-sweet [livejournal.com profile] amothea) and two others tell me various gentle versions of "wow, um, do we get salvage rights?" ([livejournal.com profile] _inbetween_ who wisely bailed, and [livejournal.com profile] enname who has bravely stuck it out). I'm still working on it out of sheer bloody-minded stubbornness, to see if I have the ability to fix it at all. I suspect [livejournal.com profile] enname has stuck it out due to a delighted fascination with train-wrecks.

Out Of Bounds, I'm just writing snippets to The Playground people as I try to work out a major plot-hole and re-write my outline according to the reality of the skating season. [livejournal.com profile] roaringmice's suggestion is still my best option.

P.S. Is there something wrong with me that my Out Of Bounds outline is in an Excel spreadsheet?

The Lost & Found

You all have them.

Stories that you posted that somehow fell through the cracks. You wrote them the week everyone was away at a convention. Or else your story canon was jossed three days after you posted them. Or they're a weird pairing that no one likes. Or else the story's gen and everyone who reads you only cares about slash.

I was rooting through my list of stories that just... fell off the radar.

The Albatross - HP Fandom - Snape/Percy
I wrote this the day before Half-Blood Prince came out, with full knowledge that canon would probably joss it and it would likely be missed in the squeeing over JKR. It also has a title that doesn't grab. I always thought it was rather sweet, which is strange in a Snape/Percy.

Liar's Chair - SGA Fandom - John Sheppard
I just wrote this one, but know? I'm not usually a gen writer and it sort of... slipped by. I really like this trip inside John's neurosis and self-doubts.

The Stars Look Very Different Today - SGA Fandom - John/Rodney
This is a gut-punch I wrote and then never posted anywhere until waaaay after the fact. I'm surprised, but I come back and re-read it for the imagery. Read the warnings, because this is the kind of story I don't usually like to read, especially if I'm not warned.

First Time A Soldier - SG-1 Fandom - Jack, Daniel
This one had two strikes against it: 1) it was written nearly a year after my active involvement in the SG-1 universe (and shortly before the cancellation of the show), and 2) it's gen, which I don't often write. It's introspective with a tight structure and comes close to "literary" fiction, whatever that is.

The Metronome - HP Fandom - young Lucius Malfoy, Tom Riddle
Here is another example of that same problem: written long after my daily involvement in HP, and it's also gen. I posted it, too, at the end of the year, in the middle of the flood of Smutmas fics. Lucius as an uncomfortable young man, arrogant, but not sure of himself.

What stories do you have in your Lost & Found? Post them.
