And now to speak the very, very obvious:

The Harry Potter series is done. Canon is complete. There will be no more.

I find myself perusing my HP fics (I was in the HP fandom longer than any other, from 2002 to 2005) sorting (Sorting?) which stories are now completely AU, and which ones have held up and survived canon. Most of these stories were written in 2003 and 2004, with a thin trickle in 2005 as I drifted to the SG-1 fandom.

Interesting how canon changes the flavor of stories, since it frames them. My Fred/George has changed the most.

Stories in the works

I'm cruising along on that Lorne/Sheppard what-the-heck-this-is-fun-whee! story I've been writing in comments to [livejournal.com profile] auburnnothenna. Sheppard, naked, pissed off and chasing Lorne down a beach on the Atlantis mainland-? My idea of a good time.

The Lorne/Heightmeyer? Let's not mince words. This story sucks donkey dick. Each attempt to repair it has made it slightly worse. [livejournal.com profile] filenotch, I fear to send it to you, if only because I want no evidence of how badly I can write when I'm writing badly. I am digging a hole in the back yard to hide the bodies. This is not mere writerly neurosis. I have had one beta say, "There are good things about this story" (the ever-sweet [livejournal.com profile] amothea) and two others tell me various gentle versions of "wow, um, do we get salvage rights?" ([livejournal.com profile] _inbetween_ who wisely bailed, and [livejournal.com profile] enname who has bravely stuck it out). I'm still working on it out of sheer bloody-minded stubbornness, to see if I have the ability to fix it at all. I suspect [livejournal.com profile] enname has stuck it out due to a delighted fascination with train-wrecks.

Out Of Bounds, I'm just writing snippets to The Playground people as I try to work out a major plot-hole and re-write my outline according to the reality of the skating season. [livejournal.com profile] roaringmice's suggestion is still my best option.

P.S. Is there something wrong with me that my Out Of Bounds outline is in an Excel spreadsheet?

The Lost & Found

You all have them.

Stories that you posted that somehow fell through the cracks. You wrote them the week everyone was away at a convention. Or else your story canon was jossed three days after you posted them. Or they're a weird pairing that no one likes. Or else the story's gen and everyone who reads you only cares about slash.

I was rooting through my list of stories that just... fell off the radar.

The Albatross - HP Fandom - Snape/Percy
I wrote this the day before Half-Blood Prince came out, with full knowledge that canon would probably joss it and it would likely be missed in the squeeing over JKR. It also has a title that doesn't grab. I always thought it was rather sweet, which is strange in a Snape/Percy.

Liar's Chair - SGA Fandom - John Sheppard
I just wrote this one, but know? I'm not usually a gen writer and it sort of... slipped by. I really like this trip inside John's neurosis and self-doubts.

The Stars Look Very Different Today - SGA Fandom - John/Rodney
This is a gut-punch I wrote and then never posted anywhere until waaaay after the fact. I'm surprised, but I come back and re-read it for the imagery. Read the warnings, because this is the kind of story I don't usually like to read, especially if I'm not warned.

First Time A Soldier - SG-1 Fandom - Jack, Daniel
This one had two strikes against it: 1) it was written nearly a year after my active involvement in the SG-1 universe (and shortly before the cancellation of the show), and 2) it's gen, which I don't often write. It's introspective with a tight structure and comes close to "literary" fiction, whatever that is.

The Metronome - HP Fandom - young Lucius Malfoy, Tom Riddle
Here is another example of that same problem: written long after my daily involvement in HP, and it's also gen. I posted it, too, at the end of the year, in the middle of the flood of Smutmas fics. Lucius as an uncomfortable young man, arrogant, but not sure of himself.

What stories do you have in your Lost & Found? Post them.

Thank you to the good folks at The Quidditch Pitch. I'm utterly amused that the pure silliness of --

Ron As 'Q', PG, Ron and Sirius

-- has been voted Best Drabble. Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] femmequixotic and the guys at [livejournal.com profile] hp_shortfics for dredging HP fics out of me long past my sell-by date.

What do fanfic writers love best?

Why, fanart, of course! The Quidditch Pitch knows this and there shall be Ron As 'Q' art come January.

For [livejournal.com profile] shocolate, comment-fic, because as [livejournal.com profile] wildernessguru learned long ago, with me? Whinging works. But don't expect any HP gems because they're just not there. This is bottom of the barrel-fic, but if you're scraping....

Extremely Short Bottom of the Barrel Comment-fic
Shame-facedly written by Icarus

The twig landed in his hair. Ron brushed it away like an annoying gnat.

The next dropped down the collar of his shirt.

"Go 'way," Ron growled, rolling over in the grass with the enormous textbook on his chest.

"That'll be easier to read if it weren't upside-down," Harry noted, throwing another twig that bounced off the heavy bound leather.

"It isn't upside-down, they're Runes! Oh." Ron turned it around. "Well, that's a bit easier." He scowled at Harry as he started laughing. "What? They look the same either way! So much gibberish. I can't believe Hermione talked me into this class."

The next twig landed on his shirt between the book and his chin. Ron narrowed his eyes at it and pretended to concentrate.

So I have a lot to do tonight to prepare for tomorrow, and I've asked WG to hog the computer, please. Of course, I'm staying at school for as long as possible, because I picked a really tough subject for my Lotus Sutra class. What do I know about Japanese poetry?

In the spirit of avoiding work (and continuing to spam my f-list before I give up on distracting myself), here are [livejournal.com profile] hpshortfics drabbles, unedited, written in roughly 30 minutes apiece.

Mockery!

Hey, [livejournal.com profile] naggingfishwife: www.godawful.net is mocking your pic of Hagrid/Buckbeak. (Actually, they seem to be really enjoying it. I think you'll find it funny.) Animagick was called "not as bad as the pic."

Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] underlucius for the beta review.

This is [livejournal.com profile] goseaward's fault. We got on the subject of music and piano months ago, and I wound up with the image of Lucius Malfoy, practicing on the harpsicord, surrounded by his life of privilege. I wondered... why would he give it up? Why follow and be humiliated by Voldemort? He already has everything.

Who wants to chairman, huh? "Vice" chairman?

ETA2: [livejournal.com profile] dphearson has been sworn in as the disreputable and unreliable look-out and guard.

ETA3: [livejournal.com profile] winstonmom has taken on the task of flustered and frustrated foreign liaison.

Our first agenda shall be posted in my next post. :D

For the Stargate fen, I have updated the Stargate Recs with ten more stories (I've 20 more waiting in the wings). I think I've cracked the 100 story mark.

A Quiet Kind Of War. PG-13. Percy Weasley/Jeremiah Stodgemore (OMC).
Bring on the angst: Percy's secrets start working their way free.

Dinner For Three. PG-13. Percy, Rita.
Playing with suspense, a little mystery, and a character study of a much more competent post-HBP Percy.

Fire update: They're bringing in a giant dumpster right now, to begin the tear-out on the burned apartments.

Coming today

Cool banner, huh? [livejournal.com profile] lizardspots just spontaneously designed it. Now I'm off to friend people who want the soundtrack... then to post it.
icarus: Snape by mysterious artist (Default)
Okay, I have 18 more songs to upload and the Beg Me For It soundtrack will be ready.

Because of the questionable ethics of making music publicly available for download I'm going to lock the soundtrack post to just my flist. If you want access to the files another way, email me at icarus_ancalion@yahoo.com and I'll work something out. I already have one person without an LJ account who's asked.

Now, regarding friending: normally I friend everyone who friends me. But LJ will only allow me to friend 31 more and I have 53 52 people I haven't friended since July (sorry, started new job and online time was cut severely).

I feel bad about this, I want to friend everyone back especially given the soundtrack, but I can't do anything about LJ's f-list limitations.

Comment here if you want me to friend you back. Bear in mind I never lock fics and pretty much don't lock anything. I'm thinking most people are just here for the stories and generally disinterested in anything else, which is totally cool.

Beg Me For It soundtrack report:

32 songs uploaded, 22 left to go: mostly SNAFU, which is 17 songs. [livejournal.com profile] wildernessguru convinced me to ax "Career Opportunities" (a playlist without The Clash? *sobs*) and may talk me out of "Dancing Days" yet.

Falling asleep now...

The post with the links will be an f-locked entry, but I'll also post just the playlist for those who already have the songs or want to hunt them down themselves. I'm friending those who've friended me (finally, sorry about the delay) before I post though I can only friend 30 more people.

Okay, I shut my eyes and nearly fell asleep on th couch. Time for bed.

Oh -- almost forgot. Percy fans, my recent vitriol over hurricane Katrina has shoved the opening of "Percyness: The Percy Weasley Archive" to the weekend. Couldn't be helped but we've waited this long, what's another week?

*zonks out.*
