I haven't talked much about my Hindi intensive here, mostly because I've been maxed and haven't had much time for LJ.
We begin with some simple math.
Hindi classe time - 20 hours per week
Hindi homework - 15 hours per week
Tutoring center - 10 hours per week
Travel/walk time - 5 hours per week
Total - 60 hours per week
This is not including the time spent on weekends looking for apartments. I try not to let my eyes pinwheel when WG wants to look at apartments during the week.
I was keeping up at first, largely because I already know the Devanagri alphabet from Sanskrit, a language which has made every language seem simple by comparison. But... Fourth of July weekend I took time to work on Out Of Bounds, ended up staying up too late, and got into one of those sleep spirals where I wake up late, then stay up late again, then wake up at my usual time, and then nap in the middle of the day and end up staying up till four am... you know how it is. In a hurry, I misread directions and had to redo an assignment. I had unexpected guests one night and couldn't get rid of them, even when I put my homework in my lap and said, "I really must do my homework. It will take me three hours and it's 11 pm." -- "Oh, sure, sure, we understand. As we were saying...." The homework grew harder, longer, took more time and effort as I fell behind, because I had to look everything up. I was getting up at 3:30am to do homework then crashing when I got home.
My professor pulled me aside and wanted to know what was wrong. I was doing so well and then.... I explained that I didn't need explanations, I just didn't quite have the time I needed to do the homework. The basics weren't solid. I was doing things like mixing up possessive pronouns and oblique pronouns just -- fuzzy about them. I don't think I did well on my last test.
I took last Tuesday off from work -- and ended up sleeping. Oops. (Although telling.) I took Thursday off as well, and, wow. To have an afternoon to do homework. 60 hours a week is doable, but too tight. The littlest things blow my schedule.
Out Of Bounds has suffered neglect. I've kept writing on the bus and short scenes when I'm spent. But I've been stressed and down because I just couldn't do it all.
I've asked to have Tuesday and Thursday afternoons off from tutoring. Thank god for the flexibility (and small budget) of the tutoring center. Not to mention the generosity of my boss.
