I have been waiting, impatiently, for this this story by Resonant. So much so that even though it's 4am and I'm about to fall on my nose after devouring her story, even though I know I will be more comprehensible later, I'm writing this now.
Everyone who knows me, knows I will leap on any Ron story (regardless of the pairing) but will often pass Harry/Draco by. Meh.
This Harry/Draco is an exception.
1 - First, her backstory is rich and detailed. This is not the retread of 'everything else out there.'
2 - Her spells are highly original and complex. Her calligromancy and use of 'foreign' spells is ingenious.
3 - The mystery is fascinating, as well as the little dark glimpses into the past.
4 - Yet despite the dark,resonant8 keeps a light, amusing tone that echoes JKR's books, and you will chuckle, chuckle, chuckle. The location of an American school of Witchcraft and Wizardry is sheer brilliance. I slapped my forehead and asked 'why didn't I think of that!'
5 - She has Hagrid. Yes, he's gone for much of the story, but few writers are up to the challenge of writing Hagrid.
6 - Her Draco is -- get this -- despite the fact that he's with the good guys -- gasp! in-character. Waves fan over all the fans who just fainted. It's true! He's mean and funny in a sharply sarcastic sort of way (like his blast-ended skrewt comment in GoF). He's far more independent as an adult, you can tell he now spouts his own irritating views instead of his father's (though he's still obnoxious). Yet you believe the relationship that developes.
7 - Her Harry is -- get this -- despite the fact that he's been through a lot and is about to get involved with Draco -- gasp! in-character. Waves fan over all the fans who just recovered, and now have fainted again. Yes, Harry is the same well-meaning, slightly-guilt-ridden but brave, sweet guy who trips over his own tongue, and, yes, yes, as usual, keeps everything to himself in order not to bother people. He has that same slow-build temper that eventually leads to an irate outburst. He has the same leaps of insight and brass-balls tendency to act first and think later. He's ever-so-slightly more controlled as an adult. But you believe his sex-life (and the way it is revealed is delightfully subtle and unexpected).
8 - Her Hermione is not the only person who figures things out.
9 - Her Ron... is hot. He's slightly off in places (at first), but then -- wow, she has him to a T. And. He's hot. Draco looking Ron up and down is very entertaining.
I find myself wanting more.
