That's an interesting idea. I think you just defined the difference between pairing-centric readers and Gen readers.
I think most of the slash readers, and pairing-centric readers, are primarily interested in the characters. Of course. But the Gen readers are more interested in exploring the edges of the Harry Potter world. Of course. I'm thinking particularly of loupnoir's Durmstrang Chronicles (http://www.schnoogle.com/authorLinks/Loup_Noir/), which is entirely OCs.
