There's a test to see if it's Daniel or Shanks you don't like: watch the original movie, because Shanks wasn't Daniel in it.
I have a theory that Shanks is stuck playing a character that he doesn't particularly like. :) The memory loss was an attempt to give him a little more room to maneuver and create a slightly different person. Since I'm still watching season 7 (I don't have cable), I don't know if it succeeded or not.
