Okay, this story gets a completely unqualified rec, and believe it or not although the writer is obviously experienced -- this is her first time writing slash! Yet the men are so very.. alpha male. Both of them.

Slow Burn by padawan_alli. Jack/Daniel. NC-17 (beautifully so).
Episode tag for Scorched Earth. The perfect combination of hot sex, determined denial and understanding. Plus I loved the ending.

Thanks for the pointer! I hadn't seen the story, no. It's not my cup of tea (the 'Dannys' keep throwing me right out of the story to the point where I couldn't finish it, which is just my pet peeve and thus no one's fault but my own). I think plenty of folks will enjoy it, tho.

Hmm. Interesting. I have the same thing about anyone calling Severus Snape "Sev."

I'm curious. Do you have a personal limit on Dannys (one per fic, and only during an emotional moment) or is it just something you hate in general?

It's a pet peeve in general. Let me preface this by saying 'in my opinion', because obviously my feelings about this aren't going to be shared by everyone. *g* Often, from my perspective, overuse of 'Danny' in a story is an indicator that a writer's perspective on the characters isn't going to match up with mine. Jack hasn't called Daniel 'Danny' once in the last six seasons in canon, so it's not really in character after early season two. I also tend to associate the nickname with stories where Daniel is written as being quite a bit more feminized/infantilized/immature than I prefer, and with folks whose basis for characterization comes more from fan fiction than from the show itself. After several years of tripping over it (and spacemonkey and Danny-boy, ugh) in particular kinds of stories, I developed a serious aversion to it, even when it's used by writers whose stuff I otherwise love.

*nods* I can see that. Daniel's changed over time, becoming tougher and less boyish. "Danny" only really fits season one and two, prior to Sha're's death. Her death changed him, hardened him (oh I write too much slash given where my mind just went).

As I run out of recs I'm tripping over Daniel characterizations that are really... he's so weak in these fics. Curled-up-in-a-ball!Daniel. Expecting-Jack-to-pick-up-on-unspoken-cues!Daniel (this is my least favorite, which is odd since that's the most subtle). Sobbing/Broken/Child-like Daniel. Confessing/Needy/Blubbering-over-minor-injuries Daniel.

But Daniel's a tough guy. He's been through a lot and picked himself up with hardly a word.

I don't know how soon you jumped out of this story, and I had some of the same warning bells early on. But you might want to give it a chance. Daniel's characterization is actually quite strong. Despite the "Danny." I cut Sushi slack for her "Sev" and I was able to only flinch every now and then.

I've used "Danny" once, in Sonic Boom, but that was a second season Daniel so it fit. I'm glad I didn't yield to temptation in Jericho.

It's been really helpful to hear your perspective and see where the pitfalls and cliches are. Your essays have also been useful. I feel like I've been given a map to the fandom.
