Just found out this afternoon that the temp assignment I'm starting tomorrow won't let me start work until they complete a background check. They work with Medicaid, so our new 9/11 laws require:

"...to ensure that they have not been sanctioned or excluded from participation in federal or state healthcare programs by a federal or state law enforcement, regulatory, or licensing agency."

"...in order to confirm that there are no criminal convictions or civil judgements related to the delivery of healthcare, actions by federal or state agencies responsible for licensing or certification of health care providers, suppliers, practitioners, exclusions from federal or state health care programs, and certain final adverse actions taken by health plans."

"...may also perform a search of the U.S. Department of Treasury, Office of Foreign Assets’ Specially Designated Nationals (OFAC SDN) list as may be required by the U.S. Patriot Act of 2001. The OFAC SDN contains the names and aliases of individuals/organizations that have had financial transactions and property blocked by the U.S. Department of Treasury, Office of Foreign Assets Control."

"...discloses to you that a consumer report will be obtained for employment purposes as part of the pre-employment background investigation and at any time during your employment."

The long and short of it? I have to take it up the ass on privacy for a two-week temp assignment.

Fuck'n A.

On another note, I think I'm going to give up on SNAFU and just publish 'Stand in the Ruins.' (Part IV of Beg Me For It.) The muse is not cooperating. Nor is the muse cooperating on Snape Manor and I'm ready to shelve what I have so far.

Oh fer....

Jesus.
Whatever- these companies can do all the checks that they want, and it *still* does not guarantee that a wacko is not going to work at the company. It does provide a way to discriminate against the poor and ethnic minorities.
Now, isn't that lovely?

Is the muse on a holiday?

Maybe you need to cleanse your palate with a sorbet-like squick or something ... have you signed up for any more of McTabby's blame challenges?

No kidding. It was relatively painless as these things go, and at the least the job seems to be a bit of fun. They leave me to work independently, which suits me just fine.

Sorbet?

That makes me think of Anna's [livejournal.com profile] coldcoffeeyes line in 'Moving Pictures' (as Ron is kissing him... "who would think Harry would melt like sorbet on a hot sidewalk?"

I think I need to rest, do some research for a bit. Not force it.

That's good, at the very least, and you have something for the while.

I'm fairly new to Harry Potter slash, but I've been reading Ron/Draco like it's going out of style (though it would have to actually be *in* style first, I suppose). Anyway, I read "Beg for It" early in my Ron/Draco exploration, and it remains a favorite.

I echo the sentiments in the long review (http://www.livejournal.com/users/icarusancalion/44221.html#cutid2) you received, except that I liked that fact that "Death-Eater Rock" was long. I loved Ron and Draco's interaction; I enjoyed all of it, and I'd love to see more. Which brings me to your comments above:

On another note, I think I'm going to give up on SNAFU and just publish 'Stand in the Ruins.' (Part IV of Beg Me For It.) The muse is not cooperating. Nor is the muse cooperating on Snape Manor and I'm ready to shelve what I have so far.

I looked through the entries after this, and checked your website, but I don't see that this has been posted. Did I miss it? If you've sent this one out into the world, I'd love a link. I don't want to miss a single bit of this story, because I absolutely love it.

Hi! It's always amazing to me to find people reading my stuff. It's a real pleasure to meet you. I'm glad you liked 'Death Eater Rock,' it was a killer project. For a while we were calling it the 'cursed fic' because it had so many problems.

'Stand in the Ruins' isn't published because it has spoilers galore for 'SNAFU.' I'm going ahead with 'SNAFU', mostly because [livejournal.com profile] isiscolo convinced me that to only show the collapse of the Ministry in retrospect in 'Stand in the Ruins' would cheat the readers (she wanted to read about in 'Death Eater Rock).

So I'm working on it, but it's not what I originally planned to do with the series.
