Which of my fics survived canon?
Jul. 22nd, 2007 11:32 amAnd now to speak the very, very obvious:
The Harry Potter series is done. Canon is complete. There will be no more.
I find myself perusing my HP fics (I was in the HP fandom longer than any other, from 2002 to 2005) sorting (Sorting?) which stories are now completely AU, and which ones have held up and survived canon. Most of these stories were written in 2003 and 2004, with a thin trickle in 2005 as I drifted to the SG-1 fandom.
Interesting how canon changes the flavor of stories, since it frames them. My Fred/George has changed the most.
The Survivors
Skinny Dipping – Harry goes skinny dipping with Ron and Percy, who arrives to tell them off, takes an interest that Harry doesn't miss. It evolves into an awkward, sometimes sweetly absurd encounter by moonlight. This story took place neatly before Goblet of Fire and formed no lasting attachment between Percy and Harry (aside from a running inside joke). The letters Percy sent to Harry in Order of the Phoenix only strengthened their implied tie, and then Percy coming through at the end of Deathly Hallows underlines his sweetness and vulnerable honesty (while his personality remains just as irritating in both canon and the story).
First Signs of Magic: Draco Malfoy – Little chance of this one falling off the canon wagon, since it's set when Draco was a wee tyke, experiencing his first signs of magic. What surprised many people was Lucius' pride and love for his son here, which is now solidly canon.
First Signs of Magic: Hermione Granger – Hermione has her first signs of magic, and the Drs. Granger and Granger panic! Another one guaranteed to fit canon. The 2003 description of St. Mungo's isn't too far off the mark.
The Metronome – This one is also safe due to being set pre-series. Gawky young Lucius Malfoy is facing a life where all his choices are predetermined by his family, his every minor achievement praised beyond its worth -- and he knows it. Then he meets one Tom Riddle, who can offer him a chance to prove himself a man, and to be more than just one more Malfoy.
An Irresistible Photo – My first HP story. A silly fic where an, erm, intimate moment between Harry and Ron is caught on film. Harry and Ron take quick clandestine action to replace the photo with a fake. You have to accept Harry and Ron experimenting together sexually, of course.
Rat For Dessert – Severus Snape has new Death Eater Peter Pettigrew in his clutches and ample opportunity to pay back the Marauders. Anyone who thinks induction into the Death Eaters doesn't involve any hazing, raise your hand. *dead silence* Yep. Thought as much.
In Servitude – At Spinner's End, Snape's revenge continues as he hunts down a Pettigrew hiding in a closet and forces him to "confess" various imagined kinky and homoerotic hijinks of the Marauders.
Just Desserts – More torment of Pettigrew at Spinner's End. Might veer off canon a bit, unless you imagine Snape with a confused crush on Harry or visualizing the revenge sex/humiliation of James.
Dessert Wine – Snape cruelly abuses Pettigrew for the entertainment of the Death Eaters and his own petty revenge, until Pettigrew lashes out in self-protection... and goes a little too far.
Sweet Hypocrisy – Snape dislikes Percy, takes advantage of him, but prevents Percy from screwing up his own future relationships. The one criticism of this story has been that Snape couldn't possibly understand matters of the heart. Oh, but he does understand, doesn't he? Deathly Hallows sealed up the crack in this story, and all one has to accept is that Snape might sleep with men.
A '57 Vincent And A Red-Headed Boy – An uncomfortable story set between Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix, where Ron and Sirius ride the flying motorcycle, get drunk, and act like stupid young men. Ron tries to rebel, while Sirius attempts to recapture his lost youth, and they end up more wounded than when they started.
Animagick – Hagrid will do anything for his interesting creatures. Buckbeak "don' mean nothin' by it." Okay, Hagrid accomplishing the animagus magic is a bit of a stretch – but he does have a natural affinity, doesn't he?
A Quiet Kind Of War – We don't know if Percy is injured at the end of the war, but it's likely. An additional (and hushed up) homosexual relationship between Percy and a Ministry pureblood is probably and adds a layer to the estrangement between Percy and his family that's not entirely Percy's fault. Only the twins are off-canon. (Or did I say Percy was under Imperius in this fic?)
A Little Night Music – Totally on-canon ficlet about Rita harassing Hermione even as a bug in a jar.
A Scandalous Interview – This works with canon if you believe that the only truth coming out of clever Ravenclaw Terry Boot's mouth is the contract he makes the reporter sign – and what she already knows about his dicey background.
Ante Up! – Yes, of course, Fred and George are lawless, can experiment with gay sex, -- even with each other -- and still be straight enough to mostly be concerned about each other's girlfriends and heartbreak (even while giving each other a very bad time). This story now has an unintended bittersweet edge though, doesn't it?
Zen Taxi – Lucius Malfoy, hire a Weasley to spy and report on his dissolute son? One might argue this has never fit canon.
Pin-Up Percy – Percy, at the zenith of his Ministry career, OotP era, is fooled into posing for some naughty pictures. Trouble is, he's never had a head for alcohol. Fits into canon with nary a click.
An Elegant Man – OotP era, Lucius Malfoy cultivates a young man as a "bit on the side" he suspects is gay and unaware of the fact. Percy thinks he has a new mentor. The strange occurrence is that Percy takes so long to come around that they become friends – until Percy's delusions are shattered and he retreats back into the closet. Previously people thought this Lucius a bit too soft. But with his devotion to his son in DH and vulnerability....
Little Boy Blue – My one attempt at chan, written from the child's point of view. Little Percy is left behind by his distracted mother and is rescued by Lucius Malfoy. But Malfoy isn't a safe rescuer.
Guy Fawkes Day – A little short fic about some twins' mayhem and Dumbledore's private enjoyment of it.
Eye Spy-Der – Percy tries oral sex with Penelope when he's supposed to be studying (and, no, he's not sure he likes going down). The curious twins have many means of spying and much more appreciation for Penelope's charms.
Dinner for Three – Rita Skeeter makes use of a curse put on Percy to milk him for news of the Ministry during HBP.
Rising Sun – This takes Harry and Cho's relationship one step further. Okay, maybe twenty steps. They go all the way and it turns out to be a big mistake, as even in the wizarding world there's a double standard for boys and girls. A guy who's had sex is celebrated, while the girl... Harry's only mistake is being more loyal to Ron than he is to Cho.
Comfortably Numb – Percy has no trouble being cut off from his family. None whatsoever. There was never anything shaky about this drabble.
Mr Archibald Fletcher's Revenge – OC silliness drabble. An eccentric, even for a wizard, dies, and sets up his enemies for much harassment from the hopeful beneficiaries of his fortune.
Ron/Teaspoon – Ron fooling around at The Burrow drabble. It's not foreplay. It's just stupidity.
Was Far Off The Map to Start
The Beg Me For It series – Voldemort won and the ministry fell – wait. That happened in canon. I never thought it would. But! Ron was working at the ministry which was turned into a low security prison, and that's most certainly not canon. Percy and Ron's lives were held in threat against each other – wait. That happened to wizards in canon. Never mind, it's a reasonable ploy by the bad guys. Percy cooperated with the Ministry until he slowly realized he couldn't any more, then he threw in with the rebellion – wait. That happened in canon. I never thought it would. Never mind. Lucius was given the role of Minister of Magic and put in charge of the Ministry prison while Draco turned against Voldemort, largely due to a split between him and his father. The final battle (in this incredibly AU story) takes place at the Ministry. Interestingly, the most AU aspect of the AU story turned out to be what I thought was its most credible point: the tension between Draco and Lucius.
Primer to the Dark Arts – It takes place (largely to avoid certain, cough, concerns about underage worries, nevermind what I was up to in my early teens) during Harry's 7th year at Hogwarts. Dumbledore is alive. Snape is teaching potions ... and instructing a very unwilling and foot-dragging Harry in the Dark Arts. Harry and Snape start sleeping together. Is there anything left that isn't off the map? What has held up is my characterization of Dumbledore and Harry, surprisingly. Harry, yes, would refuse to learn the Dark Arts unless it would save someone, and yes, he would perform Dark Arts (and Unforgiveables) for those he cares about. Dumbledore, yes, has had to examine the fine moral line he walks. But the entire plot screams "Written before Half-Blood Prince!" Though I am surprised it survived Order of the Phoenix intact.
Rare Scottish Snow – A teasing flirtation between Harry/Snape involving a snowball and a chase. Um.
Drunken Domesticity – Post-Hogwarts, Ron's a bachelor, Harry has a stormy live-in relationship with Snape. Ron develops some insight into what makes Snape tick.
Cursed Artefacts For Sale – Snape is alive and living with Harry in domestic... okay, not bliss, but a sort of irritable harmony where they ignore and "yes, dear" each other's most annoying habits. Until Snape takes Harry to an auction of rare cursed artefacts which Snape collects.
Council of Obvious Edicts – Dumbledore's alive and addressing the Wizengamot Council of Obvious Edicts. Harry is quietly dating Percy, who's a closeted gay cross-dresser. Harry sneaks Percy into the Council of Obvious Edicts as his cross-dressed date -- and only the stupidity of Rita Skeeter keeps them from becoming very outed front page news.
Silk Stockings – Harry dating a cross-dressing Percy and buying him silky underthings? Maybe if Harry's stepping out on Ginny. Which, you know, Ginny's so boring, who can blame him?
Unexpected Guest – Ron/Snape/Harry. In an over the top porn scene made plausible only by the ending.
Ron As 'Q' – Erm. Crossover with James Bond? Sirius is alive and Ron as an adult is inventing Auror gadgets for him. Heh.
Two Men On Top – Ron and Snape porn. No, not even trying for canon here. Ha.
Reunion – Ron/Draco MPreg? Gee. I wonder why canon doesn't seem to run with either Ron and Draco as ex's getting back together, or the two of them deciding to try for an MPreg male heir to secure Draco's inheritance....
Here Again – Arthur in a confusing, bizarre long-standing sexual relationship with the now-adult Percy, obvious child abuse, yet they attempt to call it off -- and fail. I'm sure this is exactly what JKR has in mind for the series.
Shot Down In Flames
First Signs of Magic: Severus Snape – Severus Snape was originally a Squib until his mad grandfather performed magical experiments on him. Of course, now we know he was enthusiastically performing magic at the age of ten.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Death Eater – A vulnerable young Death Eater Snape is prowled by a gleefully machiavellian Death Eater lothario named Torvald. Okay, it could still happen, but I don't think that the lovelorn Snape would be intrigued by Torvald. Not so soon after he lost Lily to Potter.
The Albatross – My most discredited fic. *laughs* Post-war, both Snape and Percy have albatrosses around their necks: Snape is never given credit for his part in the war, while the unpopular Percy wound up working for Death Eaters at the Ministry and being branded as a supporter. Hermione finds Percy quietly working for Snape and apparently in a relationship, each supporting the other from the dark cloud that hangs over their lives. But in canon both are redeemed, and Snape is dead.
Far Too Personal – Ron places a personal ad in a gay wizards publication ... and receives a response with an offer to meet. The story ends innocently, if most embarrassingly for both parties. Ron is just so straight though... but, hmm, maybe? If you squint really, really hard? And ignore the other person's apparent proclivities in canon?
It's Up For Debate
Two-Way Mirror – A repressed Percy hears of gay sex ... and to his own amazement, wants it. His exploration of the seamier side of the wizarding world is in stark contrast to his upright (pun intended) Ministry life, an escape from the growing fear of war. Until he stumbles on a fugitive Snape who is seeking the same. I always thought this story was safe from canon because surely JKR would never explore Snape as a sexual being. With Lily as the love of his life, well, it is possible that Snape sought physical outlets that in no way resembled what he might have had with her, but homosexuality (or bisexuality) is more of a stretch. Percy giving blow-jobs is still quite possible of course. For this story to work, however, it had to have occurred after HBP and before Snape's tenure as headmaster.
A Moment Of Sin – To relieve the growing frustration of his attraction to Harry Potter, Snape slips into Hogsmeade's wilder night life to seek a prostitute. At a club called the Werewolf's Den (not Snape's favorite) he negotiates with a young male prostitute disguised with a Glamour and begins to suspect he knows who this is.... This is more plausible because of Snape gazing into Harry's eyes at the end, a rather twisted (and uncomfortable for Snape) projection of his attraction to Lily onto Harry. But you'd have to accept a lovelorn Snape seeking sexual outlets that have no romantic content whatsoever.
In November – Ron and Neville talk about Quidditch and girls and things... and kiss unexpectedly. Told from Neville's point of view. Ron comes across in HBP and DH as pretty gosh-darn straight, but on the other hand, this story is never more than experimentation.
The Hat Trick – Ron puts off his engagement to Hermione and cycles through dead-end jobs after his experience with corruption and gambling as an assistant coach in Qudditch world. This could fit canon. After all, just because they win doesn't mean that everything after the war goes swimmingly. No one says that Harry instantly marries Ginny either. There is a bit of a Fred and George problem, of course. I expected Snape to buy it. I never expected to lose either of them.
At Fauntleroy & Diagon Alley – Here a more worldly and sexual Ron takes Harry to the gay neighborhood (well, corner, strictly speaking) of Diagon Alley. Canon in HBP and DH has underscored the fact that Ron is far more sexual than Harry, and Ron definitely knows more about the wizarding world. But Ron comes off as increasingly straight, of course.
Hagrid's Hut – Ron and Harry sneak into Hagrid's to fool around with an erotic book they stole from Snape's desk. Yes, it could have happened. I never say within the story what year Harry and Ron were fooling around. Except that it is part of Primer to the Dark Arts, and Primer is set squarely in Harry's 7th year. While Ron comes across as increasingly straight in the books, Harry's tepid attraction to Ginny, which seems to be more about a desire for a normal life than anything else, leaves his sexuality open to debate.
Not My Affair – A drunken Christmas party causes Percy to go home with the wrong person... Ron. Oh no. The rest of the story is about how the brothers recover from knowing way, way too much about each other. But! Ron never worked for the Ministry. That we know of. Of course, I never stated ages and this could be a post-Hogwarts fic....
Guy Talk – Harry tells a story of a sexual encounter, bragging to the guys in Gryffindor after hours ... and the details start to seem a little odd. That's because, although true, the story is really about a guy: Harry's just switched the pronouns. Harry's relationship with Ginny is so thin that the likelihood of his being bi has just jumped 300%. The trouble is Ron, who's giving off a straight vibe in DH like there's no tomorrow.
