The song was written by a Czech folk singer about the Soviet takeover of Czechoslovakia after the Czechs tried some liberal reforms. The singer thereafter had to leave the country. In his absence the song became a kind of protest anthem -- as one person put it, "You could get sent to Umbridge's office for humming it." After the wall fell in 1989, the folk singer (Karel Kyrl) returned and performed. He was stunned and in tears to discover that everyone in the audience knew the words.
