Two Worlds And In Between

*Icarus clears throat.* I have been remiss. Up until this time, although I have long admired [livejournal.com profile] mctabby's talented and effective (and controlled!) use of first person, I have despised Julius Marvolo too much to read Two Worlds and In Between.

But now I have read it, and I wish I'd read it sooner.

This story is brilliant, magical, powerful. Compelling. Unlike many stories in the HP fandom, it doesn't ignore magic, but keeps magic (and issues surrounding its use) as the centerpiece of a fascinatingly complex game of power. I'm grateful that I waited this long however, because I didn't have to wait for chapter four, by far my favourite chapter so far.

I'm at once satiated, and hungry for more.

EDIT: for Typo.

I've never read it, but I trusts your recs, (or anti-recs as the case may be... *ahem* I just finished Psychic Serpent, after four weeks of gruelling agony.)

..Should I?

You know, I never meant for people to figure out which story that was, I was just making fun of some random comments because the author had irritated me, personally. So it really wasn't an anti-rec, and I'll be more careful in the future. I googled, and I still can't figure out how people tracked it down. I guess, advertising is advertising.

Anyhow, [livejournal.com profile] mctabby's Two Worlds And In Between is as original as the Mirror of Maybe and the Durmstrang Chronicles, as powerful as Call Of The Wild and it has a unique flavour all its own. I can believe that this fic has spawned obsessions and a Yahoo Group all its own.

Oh, I worked it out because I was reading it at the time, someone told me it was "better than book 5" or an "alternative to book 5" -.-* I guess it's cause they ship H/Hr. But I decided not to say anything.

Oh, brilliant. Yay, reading material.

Actually, I only figured it out because I was, by cmplete coincidence, starting it that day, and I recognised the lines. It was recced to me by someone whose taste I trust, but who ships H/Hr - among other things - and she said something about it being a lot like Book 5... eh, well.

Excellent. Reading material.

Wheeeee!

And I have been remiss as well. Away from fandom for a few days, and now doing friends?skip=ridiculous number. So I've only just read this post of yours.

What can I say?

I love you, Icarus. :D

And now I'm terribly curious: why did you despise Julius before reading TWIB?

You're welcome. Um. When do you think the next chapter will be along?

As for why I didn't like Julius, it was his first words "Fortune smiled on me..." So arrogant, self-centered, self-assured in his superiority -- so competitive with a vindictive edge. I disliked him instantly. But I've developed a higher capacity for 'darkness' after writing the 'Beg Me For It' series, and I laughed my head off at his unrequited malice in chapter four. I enjoy him now.

More TWIB will be along when it's in a satisfactory condition. It's growing.

Meanwhile, you might be entertained by the three TWIB-related items in my Memories (http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=mctabby).

*cackle* Oh, how I love the diversity of reader responses to that character! Some absolutely loathe him. Some want to shag him. Some identify with him so strongly that they start hating Albus. Some want him to shag one or more of the other characters forthwith.

Well, I set out with the challenge of writing first-person POV for a real bastard...
*shares a goblet of absinthe with the OC*

I'm very glad you enjoy him now.

P.S. There is also Julius/Albus AU smut by [livejournal.com profile] teluekh and [livejournal.com profile] wired_lizard, if you're interested. ;)
