It's about oil. What I just learned from wildernessguru is that the US oil companies never got their straws into Iraq's oil reserves prior to the Gulf war. Then after the Gulf war, Iraq was under embargo for 12 years. As a result, Iraq has the largest untapped oil reserves in the Middle East.
