I asked, and now you may enjoy the bounty.

I asked [livejournal.com profile] painless_j what she thought were the must-reads of the Harry Potter fandom. She felt only qualified to pick the Harry/Snape and Harry/Draco pairings.

So, drumroll please... for Harry/Snape.

Snarry, long.

*sigh* I love half of those and I hate the other half.

What would you consider your Harry/Snape must-reads, other than the ones on this list?

All of mine are pre-DH, which is when I stopped reading Harry Potter fanfiction.

I think I am echoing [livejournal.com profile] whatifisaidno actually.

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-04-20 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
My actual question to her was "what do you consider Harry Potter fanfic canon?"

She said she could only make those choices for Harry/Snape and Harry/Draco, and these were her picks. She has some stories she doesn't particularly like (The Mirror of Maybe being one) that she considers canon because of their following.

I just wanted to avoid the label of "canon" on my post, which in my experience at least, could make people go a little nuts.

[identity profile] enname.livejournal.com 2008-04-20 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Mm, it is just interesting because about half of those I would run screaming at, no matter how much I might agree that they are considered canon. It is quite possible that I would have a better reaction to the word canon, rather than considering them as must reads to anyone who is entering the SS/HP end of HP fandom. Apparently I have no problem acknowledging that fandom has bad taste (yes, yes, my bias I know!) every now and then, but I draw the line on insisting everyone partake of it.

*snort* Just goes to show that I am odd.

*glares at thesis* ONE MORE PARAGRAPH IN THE CONCLUSION AND THEN I CAN GO TO BED. *shakes it hard* Come on, you are then officially complete barring edit nitpicks.

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe I should call it HP Harry/Snape canon then. It just seemed... cocky.

Interesting list--I think I'd agree that these are all part of S/H history, even the ones I'm not wild about. I think I'd add a story or two by [livejournal.com profile] miraminx, maybe Till Break of Day and One Warm Beautiful Thing, or A Good Buy.

Thanks for asking and posting!

My actual question for [livejournal.com profile] painless_j was "what do you consider canon for Harry Potter fanfic?" This was her answer for Harry/Snape. (Sigh. Sometimes Primer to the Dark Arts is included in the canon and sometimes it isn't.) But when I posted it I didn't want to make that claim to canon. :)

[identity profile] pervert-bitch.livejournal.com 2008-04-20 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Fuck, all of those are clasic snarry... even the new-ish ones :P

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. That is the point. A (hopefully) classic Harry/Draco list shall be posted this weekend, barring any RL emergencies.

I'm just really glad you did this. For the past couple days I've been slogging my way through fanfic sites trying to find something...y'know, good.

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
There's more coming. [livejournal.com profile] painless_j also provided a Harry/Draco canon list as well.

Thank you so very much for posting this! I love the odd engrossing HP story, and stayed up till three in the morning reading Cambiare Podentes. Thank you again to the both of you for pointing these stories out!

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
You're welcome, although I give [livejournal.com profile] painless_j all the credit. (Cambiare Podentes is addictive, I agree.) I plan to post the Harry/Draco lists this weekend.

Thank you for the list! I'm still feeling rather new the HP fic (even after more than half a year) so I really appreciate lists like this. ^_^

I'm have pretty much the same reaction as a couple people up stream: I love half of them and hate the others. Actually, it's more I stopped reading half of them when I determined they were running in the direction of my squicks (a policy I wish everyone would follow) but all the ones I finished, I loved to bits. I'd say that makes it a very good list indeed.

Now off to explore the ones I haven't read.

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
Marvelous. I have the Harry/Draco list to post this weekend. *nods*

[identity profile] fer-de-lance.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
a policy I wish everyone would follow

Heh. Guilty as charged. I read Cambiare all the way through, even though it horrified me. (Please note: I did not comment/email the author re: my aversion.) Egad. Squick city. (And not just the rape squick; it also hit my "awful characterisation" squick bang on the head.)

Given that, it seems a little... specialised in its following, to me, to qualify as the "HP/SS Canon". But maybe it is, and I just don't know all those people who love it?

Eh. (Was very surprised to see "The Fourth Year" wasn't on there, though! And "Courage Under Fire"!)
