Never fear, for those of you who thought I'd given up the rest of the drabbles -- I'm pretty stubborn about my word. My goal is to try and knock them out this week.

Now for some cloak and dagger Snape/Percy for [livejournal.com profile] chaos_rose .

Deep Throat
by Icarus

Severus studied the swinging sign of the Belfrey Bat and waited for nightfall, that part of the evening where it was too early for partygoers and too late for the after-work crowd. It seemed his new 'contact' knew this, which spoke volumes.

The Order had warned him it was a gay bar. 'Try to fit in' he was told. Severus chuckled to himself. They didn't know him all that well. It was one of the few benefits of switching sides, that your new 'friends' didn't know where all the bodies were buried. No one knew, in fact, outside of certain circles that had nothing to do with Gryffindors and Weasleys and Orders of Anything.

If nothing else, Severus was discreet. He prided himself on that.

He edged into the room and slid easily onto a barstool that he knew, without a second glance, would afford a perfect view of the door. The room pulsed with obnoxious music, and an absurdly thin crowd for such a loud 'festive' noise. Men made sideways glances about them, avoided looking too long at those they didn't want, seeking the averted eyes of those they did. All the while pretending to drink and dance and enjoy themselves. The lucky ones disappeared into the men's room.

It had been a while. The music had changed, but the dance was still the same. Severus watched the door.

When his contact arrived, he knew it immediately. The dark cap over his hair was both unattractive and strange, and not what you'd wear to be picked up. But mostly, it was the way he looked about. He did not even attempt to appear suave, or relaxed. Severus shook his head slightly, though he covered the motion with his drink. Amateur.

The man spotted him quickly enough, in fact instantly if he were honest, and made right for the stool beside him. And that was only the first surprise.

It explained the hat. That Weasley red hair was like a beacon.

My, my, Head Boy. Aren't we playing a dangerous game?

The boy - well, man now - knew enough to stare straight ahead as he spoke. They exchanged codewords, though he was certain neither had any doubt of the other. Severus felt a slight tingle as the charms attached to those codes were diverted and diffused. If he'd been the wrong person, a low-level Obliviate charm, mixed with a touch of illusion, would have made him remember, oh, a fat Alchemist -- anything other than an attractive, serious young man with red curls escaping that black cap. Severus wanted to stuff them back in. Why did the stuffy, uptight Head Boy request to meet here?

"I have some information. For the Order," he said, stating the obvious. About Minister Fudge no doubt, though he didn't say that. "But it can't appear to come from me."

And more about Malfoy, like as not. Oh, but the lost Weasley was playing with the big boys, wasn't he? This was a valuable contact… and so immature and fragile. Why didn't he just contact his father? Surely a message home wouldn't look suspicious.

"What changed your mind?" Severus said into his drink. The answer would tell him much.

"Changed it from what?" Weasley asked, in that typical affronted tone.

You were taking your first baby-steps down a very long, dark road, that’s what. "From what it was before," he said in icy tones. Surely the boy knew.

"What do you mean?"

At that moment, Severus realised -- of course. He didn't know. That's how it had been for himself. Everything had made sense, he was right, the rest of the world was wrong. Till it all came crashing down around him.

He had forgotten. Severus was quiet a moment, as he recovered from his epiphany.

"Why meet here, of all places?" It was irrelevant, but curiosity got the best of him.

There was a long pause. One that didn't bode well to his mind. Finally, Percy -- yes, that was his name -- turned and looked at him, clear-eyed.

"Because I wanted it to be you."

Finis.

I... wow. Jesus. Certainly not a pairing I'd usually try, but I thought I'd take a look... wow. Er, okay, shall snap myself out of the stupor now. Very interesting. Just, I don't have a lot of words to describe it. This wasn't so much about the characterisation as the plot, and your description, and the directness of Percy's last words. Well done.

I think the fact that it's called Deep Throat adds a certain something to it, too ;)

Okay, I just have to say this is utterly and completely wonderful and full of so much I need to have and know that if you don't write more I will probably need to take up stalking you in a really unpleasant way and the only thing that will make me stop is you writing more of this.

Now, my seriousness here shouldn't be underestimated. I've read it three times, and lectured myself about all the ways in which I know and have frequently espoused that it is wrong to tell an author that a brilliant story is unfinished. So, fine, it's not unfinished. It is right as it is. But I still want more, I can't help it, and I'm afraid that my insanely hovering around the borders of your life poking you with metaphors is our conjoined fate if you do not write me some more of this world...

That is all.

I love your Snape/Percy dynamics with a fiery, fangirly passion. Splendid, intriguing, and as always, those little magical details (i.e. the "low-level Obliviate charm, mixed with a touch of illusion, would have made him remember, oh, a fat Alchemist") that always delight me.

Warning! Fangirly squee ahead!

Oh, I love Spy!Snape stories. :)

This is lovely, with just enough backstory and detail. Snape's 'voice' is perfect, too. And the last line makes me hope for a second chapter at some later date.

You build awesome worlds!

This wasn't so much about the characterisation as the plot

Very rare for me, too. ;)

the directness of Percy's last words

There's a lot hidden in those last words. No one was supposed to know that Severus was familiar with this sort of club. But Percy did, and knew Severus would be the one to meet him. Only people involved in Severus' Slytherin/Death Eater past, and even then, only those who ran in certain circles, knew. That tells you a lot about where Percy's been.

And Percy wanted it to be him. Because Snape would understand his position? Because he was interested in Snape? For other, more subtle and practical reasons, that he thought Snape would handle his precarious position as informer better?

Last. How did Percy know he was a spy? And how did he beam in on Snape so quickly?

These are all the things that ran through Severus' mind when Percy said that. Those words left him speechless.

I think the fact that it's called Deep Throat adds a certain something to it, too.

LOL! Yeah. It tells you right off that Percy's never going to get caught, no one but Snape is ever going to know who the source is. And the sexual overtones... ;)

Yes, but everything about the situation can be deduced from Percy's words here. Really. The whole story's been told, in a very compressed way, based on what Percy knows about Severus.

Read the above answer, where I explained. Well. More or less. We know everything but Percy's motives.

The only thing we can't guess is what Snape is going to do about it all. But... he hasn't much choice there, does he?

No he doesn't and I so see this. It's not like I think there's a hole, or it's incomplete, or something I need to know to enjoy it. I just have a totally unjustifiable desire for more.

those little magical details

Ah. Very good point, thank you for mentioning it. Truthfully, just like I believe Lord of the Rings fanfiction is not really effective without lyrical detailed descriptions of the setting, I think that Harry Potter fanfiction is not really Harry Potter without little magical (and preferably amusing) details. I started writing HP fanfiction for two reasons:

1) I was looking for Harry/Ron porn, and didn't find enough, and little of good quality.
2) I felt the fanfiction tended to forget the magic! I kept saying, great read, but where's the magic, eh? Is it Harry Potter without magic?

This is a very long story compressed into a very tiny space. I was wondering just how much of it the readers would unspool.

Nothing pleases me more in these 'drabbles' (I use the term loosely) than to have succeeded in getting a snapshot of a story you - the requesteed - liked (or written it, as in the case of those that got out of control, heh).

Allow me a moment to just bask.

Truthfully, the entire story really is in this scene: the past is compressed into Percy's last few words, and the future is shown by the implications of the title.

I have thoroughly enjoyed your enthusiasm here. I have a warm, happy glow from your comments. Because even if I don't write the front and back end of this story (likely I won't), you've essentially told me that I've successfully alluded to it. That's the sign of a good drabble (or two-page one-shot), when it extends off the page into the past and into the future.

Well good, but don't think that this makes me want it less, or that I won't be stalking your LJ prodding away at the possibility. Cause, yeah, I can be like that.

I love the way you show the similarities between Snape and Percy, something I had never thought about before. A moment of revelation, for me and for Snape.
