icarus: (Happy Rodney by Monanotlisa)

I'm watching a movie about Henry the VIII.

Now I want fic where John Sheppard's the king, and he ruthlessly requires heirs to stay on his throne. And Rodney procures the women, despite his own feelings.

*waits*

LOL

Oh no, I think you'll have to be writing that one. It may be the one fic that pimps me into SGA finally.

*taps foot*

If you think on it, that's darn close to Written By the Victors.

Point. But here they don't have an existing relationship.

Yet.

Well, you imagined it and posted about it, so someone is writing it. Or will soon.

I could do with a Sheppard/McKay version of Becket, complete with painful ending. On the other hand, even the Flan can't beat out O'Toole's blue eyes.

Heh. I'm in the middle of a massive WiP right now, so not a chance.

*waits for fandom to comply*

There was this scene wher the young, handsome Henry was leaning on a table, irascible about his queen's inability to bear him a male heir. It said "John Sheppard" to me.

Mmm. Tell me about Becket, because I haven't seen it. I hear Becket(t) and think "Waiting for Godot."

Amazon has it on DVD, first of all. (No use recommending something hard to get hold of).

Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole (when they were young and incendiary).

Amazon.com essential video
Made in 1964, but set in 12th-century England, this is the fact-based story of Henry II (Peter O'Toole) and his dear friend, the Archbishop of Canterbury (Richard Burton). When the king appoints his former drinking buddy to the high religious office, he believes he has placed an ally into power. Instead, he learns that Thomas very much takes his job to heart, prompting Henry to ask that fateful question--"Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest?"

This won an Academy Award for Best Screenplay, and it is a strong example of finely tuned performances--both leading men received Academy Award nominations for their roles. There is much passion and rage on the screen, but the beauty of their performances is that we always know that love is there as well. The film, shot on location in England, is also visually appealing. Trivia buffs may be interested to know that Peter O'Toole played Henry II four years later in The Lion in Winter.

I first saw it when I didn't even know what UST was, I'm pretty sure I didn't know what sex was, and I was still completely drawn into the relation between the two men. Henry is so angry because he's so hurt, so betrayed, because he loves Becket. It's unmistakable that this is the greatest and most important relationship in his life; no woman could ever compare.

It is cool to watch Lion in Winter afterward as well and reflect on how Becket shaped the Henry who is so at war with Eleanor of Aquitaine.

Yes, exactly! I think we watched it in English class after reading the play, and I remember being totally overwhelmed by Henry and Becket and their intense relationship. I don't know if my heart could take a SGA version!

Becket remains one of my favorites. The casting, story and costuming is fantastic, the direction--not so much. It used to be very difficult to get a hold of, but it was, as auburn pointed out, released on DVD last May, after an umpty0million year wait.

We have Scarecrow Video in Seattle. People fly in to rent videos from Scarecrow's collection of rare videos, so even if it weren't released recently on DVD, we could get our hands on a copy. *smugness*

oh, absolutely--it's been out on VHS for a dogs age. The transfer to DVD was excellent, they did a restoration, which was re-released to a handful of theaters last year. Alas, the closest one to me was Dallas, and it wasn't in the stars at the time. *mourns* To have seen Peter & Richard on the Big Screen....
