Things I learned from the [livejournal.com profile] mcshep_match: be careful of your summary.

Now that the voting is over I can feel free to rec whomever I like, regardless of the team. Some of my favorites from the [livejournal.com profile] mcshep_match so far:

A Place On The Corner by [livejournal.com profile] almostnever
Summary: Some things are worth waiting for.

I passed this over the first time, but then [livejournal.com profile] lavvyan recced it, so I backed up and took another look. Sweet, gentle, and Junk Cheap-esque take on John with his perverse rebelliousness and slacker facade. The holidays first seem to be a randomly selected theme but one is a critical pivot point. Have I read anything else by [livejournal.com profile] almostnever?

Blink by [livejournal.com profile] lavvyan
Summary: I am going to tell you a story. About Dr. McKay and how he bought an eye from me, and how that one small act led to the strangest night in my entire life.

Blink is pure science fiction with an interesting OC point of view. I didn't like this character, but I enjoyed her, if that makes sense. I recommend the author change McKay and Sheppard's names and publish it as pro-fic.

Mission: Improbable by [livejournal.com profile] sageness
Summary: "Your mission, should you choose to accept it…"

I love the attention to detail of the military missions. The plot moves and moves, weaving John and Rodney's open secret of a relationship into the background. So rare to find an author who writes great action scenes, too. I could see [livejournal.com profile] sageness struggling at times to shoehorn this action/adventure fic into the "Home Team" theme, and I didn't need the last part back home, but this was a satisfying adventure.

With Bones Like That by [livejournal.com profile] torakowalski
Summary: “I’m Dr Rodney McKay,” she said slowly. “We were at Berkeley together. You majored in mechanical engineering because you’re an idiot who wanted to go to war rather than use your brain for something worthwhile. I’m Rodney McKay with breasts, okay? It’s not that hard to grasp." AU. Title from The Fratellis’ Chelsea Dagger.

I absolutely loved John in this. He handles the weirdness that is Rodney-with-an-unexplained-sex-change with aplomb, skipping his own reaction to deal with the here and now. And Rodney is just so... defensive, blustering, blunt, insensitive and sweet. So Rodney. Yes, "Rodney" has become an adjective.

This was a really bad time for the library to finally cough up a couple books I've had on reserve for a while. J/D ficathon and McShepMatch? *sigh*

Thank you for the recs. They're where I tend to start my reading...

[livejournal.com profile] almostnever wrote a classic QAFUK series, "Almost Never".

Ahhh... I just learned this is [livejournal.com profile] almostnever's very first SGA story, too. *squishes* Found a new SGA writer.

Did I rec something? I mean, yes, I loved that story, it hit one of my buttons, but wow, I was out of it for the last week of working on the Big Bang story. Three hours sleep a night is not enough for things to make it into long term memory.

You didn't. I saw your comment in response to it and thought, "Okay, this one I have to read." Then I realized how long it is.

Looked at the summer language intensive I'm taking.
Looked at the ten hours a week I'm working.
Looked at the 15-20 hours of week of homework I have.
Looked at the continuing saga of Out Of Bounds.

And put it off for now. I'll save all that spare time for your Big Bang fic. *gets out the fork and knife, ties on the bib*

Yep, set aside a chunk of time. It's still hovering right there at ~245,000 words and I can't stand to look at it. The only reason I think it is any good is because I trust my betas. But, hey, I'm going to get art to go with it. Picking out some prospective scenes for drawing was fun and I think I did a decent job of offering up visual parts, since I know what would be hard to draw.

I bet Out of Bounds is going to beat that word count when you finish. And you won't be insane from trying to do it in four months either.

Thank you! :>

And yeah, since there were several people who said the story might also work as pro-fic, I'm kind of thinking about getting off my ass and turning this into a novel-length thing, making that my project for next year. It'd have to be written from a different POV though (John's, I think) and I'm nervous as hell about it so, yeah. *coughs*

I'd probably get on your nerves with it, too, if that's okay. Since you're so nicely ruthless (and since you brought up some very good points I never even thought about just chatting about it and I forgot what they were *headdesk*).
