It turns out SPN is dominating my SGA/SPN crossover.

Drat. I was trying to make the SPN accessible to the SGA audience.

But Skinscript has useful suggestions to work SGA back into the mix. Sigh. 1,000-word Help Haiti ficlet now approaching 10,000 words....

In the meantime while I scratch my head, I'm writing my outline of the Pern/SGA fusion to Mad Maudlin in chat (while she chews over her Star Trek/SGA fusion).

Wait. Wasn't there a time I hated crossovers? I'm sure I did a post or comment where I called them "a pointless muddying of canon." Said the same about AUs.

What happens to us in fandom that makes our tastes more catholic?

Is it that we come to fanfic looking for more of what we wanted from the book/show/comic/whatever and then discover fandom offers more? Do we become increasingly adventurous as writers and can't resist the challenge of revisualizing canon? Or is it our friends' fault, and the fault of challenges, as we're asked for stories we'd never seek out? Or perhaps we read that one crossover that does it so well, we want to try it.

I blame SGA. The fandom has been so wacky from the get-go that I'm writing (and reading) oddball plots I'd never considered in HP or (heavens) Lord of the Rings (that Harry Potter/James Bond fusion excepted).

Hey, don't feel bad, I'm STILL trying to find the gumption to write the SGA/Galaxy Quest fusion a friend dumped on me years ago. I can even hear the dialog in my head sometimes, but every time I try to write it, my brain spasms.

I think sometimes the crossovers are just the result of us thinking, I love this set of characters and that set and whoa, wouldn't it be cool to have them run into each other. Fusions and AUs stem from a more complicated reaction, one of 'this is a great scenario, but...' or 'I love the characters, but the plot sucks...'. You want to have the pleasure of the characters you like/love and you want them in a scenario and plot that is interesting and will showcase them.

Speaking of fusions... ready to look over the notes for my SGA/SGU AU fusion. I call it both, because the background for SGA is alternate universe even before I fuse with with SGU.

I'd love to look at more of the Pern fusion ideas. (What, procrastinate, me? Pshaw!)

I think part of it is that the longer you're in fandom the more you realize how many ZOMG SHINY fandoms there are. And you want to write about one without leaving behind your favourites from the other. Or you want your One True Characters from each show to meet each other because damnit, you love them both. And more rarely you want all those people from the giant fandom to see how awesome your smaller fandom is.

Yay!

I'm thinking I need to go back to my sign up and amend it. RIght now it says McKay/Sheppard, but there's a relationship between Todd and Sheppard that will run through the entire thing.

Plus the kinky other than human gender wraith/human sex...

Nothing pleases me more than the prospect of being responsible - but not for damages! - for a feral dragon. The very phrase fills me with evil glee. Feral draaaaaaaagon! Swooping down on holds and feasting on their valuable wherries! The holders tells their little brats that if they aren't good, they'll be left out at night and the dragons will snatch the up and eat them! So much trouble between hold and weyr.

(I can't help it, I giggle over weir/weyr every time I think of this fusion. Elizabeth Weir, Weyrwoman)

I, Elizabeth, Weyrwoman!

Told in first person, present tense.

ROFL

Sorry, it just tickles me, whether she's Rodney's mother or not. (Which, vague eeeew reaction to begin with, but that's more my Elizabeth reaction than anything.)

I don't think she'd be very good at it, but that might be the point if this is interrognum Pern, with the decadant and badly run weyr.

Gotta read your outline next.
