Moving to my aunt's this week.

We spent Friday cleaning out her basement. Locating scattered Christmas decorations. Emptying a walk-in closet that was waste deep in stuff (with waist to ceiling wasted space). Reorganizing her laundry room to make more space for boxed that were stacked in the corners of the basement.

Then, I must admit, my mother really is a talented decorator.

She moved three pieces of haphazard man-furniture (a couch obviously bought by my aunt's husband, based on its overstuffed brown Lay-Z-Boy-ness; a modern cream colored wedge shaped sectional; and an old fashioned rocker), and made it lovely.

She set the rocker so it was the first thing we saw as we came in. It is the most attractive piece. Then she moved a silk tree so you saw the tree instead of the TV across the room, directed the eye to the two pieces of furniture that worked together color-wise, and put in an up-light to splash classy leaf-patterned shadows on the ceiling.

Pling! An attractive space. I was so surprised.

There's even a fireplace.

You know, this could actually work out better for you. It will feel more like your own space. Plus now you can say you have a basement apartment instead of "living with your mother". Of course my daughter (who lives with me) said that once you're over 30 you change that to "my mother's living with me".
