Fic rec:
Starting Over (In the Same Place) by Pogrebin, PG-13, Gen
Everyone has probably read this but me. It takes place after the finale, once Atlantis is on earth and everyone tries to figure out what to do with it (aside from revealing the Stargate program and turning it into a tourist trap). Atlantis is stripped down to a skeleton crew, John is given a gate team out of Cheyenne mountain, Rodney's moved to R&D, and the Atlantis gate is posing problems for the SGC.
One gets the impression that the military and science community of the Stargate program were rubbing their hands together, eager to get their hands on Atlantis ... and they're caught up short to recall that Atlantis comes with people. And that these people are difficult to reassign. Not only do they not want to stay on earth, they're people who'd been thrown away (Russia, Antarctica...) for good reason. Plus, they'd shown their worth. I like it that the military here wants to use its people where they'll best serve.
Still, everyone's on the fence about what to do, and Rodney's desperate to tip the debate in their favor.
It's thoughtful assessment of SGA filled with tense undercurrents, and I find I believe this resolution fully. I especially appreciate General Landry's musings on the SGA team, and his insight into Sheppard. I find like the cantankerous old grouch more here than on the show.
