INTERVIEW MEME
THE RULES
1. Leave a comment, saying you want to be interviewed.
2. I will respond; I'll ask you five questions.
3. You'll update your journal with my five questions, and your five answers.
4. You'll include this explanation.
5. You'll ask other people five questions when they want to be interviewed.
1) How did you first meet wildernessguru?
God, that's a long story. The short version: he lived across the hall from me.
Okay, more detail: Heh. I moved across country, with very little money and didn't know a soul in Seattle.
wildernessguru was in similar dire straits, had just come off a fishing boat after leaving firefighting - most of the people in the building were drunk fishermen. I was hit on like you wouldn't believe, and
wildernessguru was no exception. But I had a great technique of getting rid of guys who were hitting on me: I'd tell them alllllll the most miserable facts of my life. By the time I got to my schizophrenic brother and my wacko mother, they were backing out the door. Hee.
wildernessguru listened to every ugly story I could pour on him and finally said, thoughtfully, with the most sincere look on his face: "That must have been very hard for you." That simple.
2) What is your biggest squick in fanfiction - the one thing that makes you shudder and want to go scrub your brain?
Chatspeak. I recoil in horror every time I see it, and I believe it has the power to kill brain cells on sight.
3) If you could meet one fictional character - not just in fandoms you write for, but any fictional character at all - who would it be and why?
Frodo Baggins. I think he would be pleasant company (if difficult to get to know), both literate and insightful. Plus I'd love to spend time at Bag End. ;)
I think I'd like to swap stories and hear what he has to say after the destruction of the ring. There are glimpses of what resulted from that ethical crucible - flashes of visions of Sam's future children, in addition to his suffering from his wounds. But for the most part, Tolkien shows him from the outside. We don't know what he learned.
4) From what I've seen, you've only written for LotR and Harry Potter. What is it about these two universes that makes you want to write about them?
I am a Lord of the Rings addict. I've read the books ... I lost count after 30 times. I started reading Frodo/Sam slash, and so much of it was so non-canon that I ground my teeth.
Harry Potter, I love the magic and how there's so much to work with in this universe. It's not mapped out yet. And now I'm kinda hooked by the community. :)
5) Does Tibetan Buddhism have anything to do with the fanfiction you write? I mean, does your philosophical sensibility influence your writing, and if so, how?
I've used Harry Potter fanfiction to work out the darkness I found in the religious hierarchy vs what's really good.
Harry's struggle with dark magic in Primer To The Dark Arts is really my own coming to terms what I will and will not accept. What is by nature wrong? Is it mitigated by the intention? His ethical struggle is hidden under the humour, the sex and the magic, and Harry himself merely resists dark magic instead of dealing with it, but it's there. Not that Harry's choice is the right choice, or even the only choice, it's just that it's his to make.
A Moment Of Sin is a more transparent ethical decision, and in this case is dealing the question how doing the morally wrong thing can be what is ethically called for. It's called 'Skillful Means' and is one of the stickiest questions in Buddhism, because it's been used to justify all sorts of things.
Otherwise, Buddhism simply leaks through in ways that I don't notice, because it's a part of me and my life.
ETA: Hey guys, I'm gonna have to put this off. RL has acted up this weekend. *tears out hair*

Date: 2004-01-25 01:24 am (UTC)Oh, I had more than pop-ups. I had a data miners and malware. Also, when a data miner called 'Comet' tried to update itself without my permission, I pulled the plug on it halfway (I'm on a dial-up). So I was getting this notification that Comet had a missing something-file -- did I want to fix it? No!
I tried to delete it, but it just wouldn't go away and it claimed to be in my D:/drive but wasn't.
Anyways, thank you. You've my sanity and probably prevented some real damage to my machine from this Comet program.
