Young Severus Snape is hunted by a Death Eater Lothario. "The Death Eaters had grown from a centuries-old club for blue-blooded Wizards to something distinctly more dangerous." Guy Talk Harry/Ron
*HP Classics, Niffled on Fiction Alley, Switchknife
The Gryffindor dorm is abuzz with laughter and gossip after curfew as the boys cover for their friends' hot date. The talk turns to sex, and Harry gives away a tad too much information. "Oh. Sweet Hypocrisy Snape/Percy
*Amanuensis, Snapeslash, Ari
Haven't we all had a blind spot, something that we knew, but didn't admit to even ourselves? Severus Snape has no patience for such. Percy is convinced he hasn't a trace of compassion. Written for the RS.org fic drive.
Ante Up! Fred/George
*Kris
A bit of friendly competition that gets quite out of hand. Not that it bothers Fred and George, mind you. Written for the RS.org NC-17 fic drive.
Beg Me for It (Warning: Non-Con!) Ron/Draco
*HP Classics, finalist for the Harry Potter Slash Awards, Switchknife, Brodie, Isis, Dahlia
Ron tells the story of just exactly how he wound up working for the Death Eaters. Lucius asks Ron for a favour. This was written for the RS.org sleazy fic drive. Fred C. challenged me... 'just once I'd like to see Draco beg Ron for sexual pleasure.' I said, Jesus, what would that take? Well Fred, this is for you. Date: 2004-04-19 12:01 am (UTC)Personal favourite (because it's so often overlooked, sad neglected fic that it is) is Sweet Hypocrisy. Percy/Snape.
That's where I fell for Percy.

Date: 2004-04-16 12:45 pm (UTC)This is really fun.
Since I'm avoiding workout of sheer curiosity I googled to see if there were places these stories were rec'd that aren't onIcarus

Date: 2004-04-19 10:30 pm (UTC)I've done 17 and 18 but it was when I had easier classes--the 18 hours was physics II, general astronomy, seminar in scifi and fantasy, basic computer programming, and interpretation of literature. So spread out and different types of projects for each class. Lately (er, this semester) I've stuck to 16 though. Beyond that and I go a little (more) loopy.
And, your sheer number of recs has me in complete and utter awe.

Date: 2004-04-20 12:12 am (UTC)I think I screwed up here. Bye-bye good grades.
I've been studying the recs phenomenon, and I think what happened here is that I did something very unusual with Primer to the Dark Arts: I consistently put out a chapter a day over the space of a month on ff.net. That was pre-beta, and generated a lot of interest.
Then during the beta process I put out a beta'd chapter a week on Fiction Alley. Since the story was already done for the most part, I was also working on other stories at the same time. Those stories were caught up in Primer's orbit.
Usually people start smaller, a short story here and there before they tackle a novel-length piece.
Usually the novel-length stories are posted at most a chapter a month. They don't gain the kind of momentum that Primer to the Dark Arts had.
The reason why I posted so fast was -- I could. I was out of work and sick. Most people post more slowly because other responsibilites eat into their time.
Once you have that kind of momentum (and your story's half-way decent), people are hungry for more. They read stuff that would have languished if they'd been posted in a vaccuum.
So there you go. Recs.

Date: 2004-04-20 12:20 am (UTC)Do you have the ability to drop a class? Sometimes it helps to just focus on one fewer, even if you get fewer credits. (Not that I've ever taken this advice myself, but, y'know, it's a good idea.)
And with the recs--there's also the fact that a lot of your fics are at least medium-length, often very long. In addition to the quick posting of Primer there was the sheer length, and even your one-offs are around ten pages each at least--am I right? Whereas my fics usually run around, mm, 2000 words. So less meat, less memorable. And then there's the whole quality issue--I cringe at almost everything I wrote before the FQFs last summer, though at least I can tell I'm improving.
And I hadn't realized you were sick. :\ (Of course, at that point we couldn't even figure out your gender, so I suppose that's not surprising!)

Date: 2004-04-20 12:37 am (UTC)Yeah, the average length of my one-off stories is about 15 pages. I hadn't considered that angle. When I wrote my Tolkien fanfiction I thought 6 pages was a lot. But I participated in this Tolkien RPG that forced me to write faster -- just get it out. (My RPG partners complained that I had diamond-honed phrasings, but it took me forever to post and I held up the game.) After Primer, I had a habit of writing long stuff. 15 pages was pfft.
Yeah. I was sick. I had a bad reaction to a normal medication I started in August of 2002. We didn't notice anything was wrong until mid October (that was when I started Primer). When I discontinued the medication I started to get better, but it took me until Jan.-Feb. to start feeling normal again.
Primer to the Dark Arts really cheered me up when I was going through all that. :)
