icarus: Snape by mysterious artist (Percy Ficathon by Dien)
[personal profile] icarus
Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] and_love and [livejournal.com profile] switchknife, it seems we're actually going to have a Percy Ficathon Website.

Well.

I'll be darned.

Wow.

I threw together a temporary front page, not too bad for someone who barely knows HTML. But we'll get something nicer soon, I promise.

Er. Anyone a designer? Or wants to code stories? Or knows how I would set up a searchable archive?

Just a few little things.

Er, I'm a part time web designer but I'd be more than happy to help code up stories although I'm not sure how one would go about setting up search-able archives..

Hoorah! Coding. I shall get back to you when we're at that point. 71 challenges.

My.

Oh, I'm so excited. I've wanted to see a Percy fanfiction site since I discovered Perfect was no longer being updated.

Anything that spreads the Percy-love is a wonderful thing in my book.

The coding part is painless. I have no idea how to set up a searchable index, though. And I can't claim to be a designer.

This is just such incredible news. It's finally sinking in. *bounces* You know what this means? People will have a central Percy source. Right now you have have to pick around for Percy stories, hunt under rocks.

I've a question. Are you the one who offered to do a second Percy-fic if someone wasn't able to do theirs? I just heard from someone who's RL will prevent them from writing for a while.

Get eFiction; it's designed specifically for fiction archives. Er. If the site can use php, that is.

Yes, and it looks like I have to download PHP 4.1 to run the script. Because otherwise it gets associated with Excel of all things. But PHP.net says that download is no longer available (huh?)?

I will figure this out.

Hmmn . . . That seems a little too bright and glaring for the Prim One. I'll see what I can do about making some graphics or whatever for the site. Did you want the site to have frames or just single pages? I can help with all of that stuff. I don't know much php, but I can certainly throw a site together lickedy-split. Let me know and in the mean time, I'll work on some graphics. Hmmn, perhaps a lovely script-fonty thing and pull a few really good scenes from some of those fantabulous fics that have been submitted thus far. ::goes off to hunt::

Single pages, no frames. Yes, more prim and dignified, please.

Images: wonderful.
Better font: even better.
A few fine scenes: oh frabjus day.

Thank you!

I will code stories, but I only know the basics of webdesign, and didn't Switch make a post recently about how the slash recs website was made searchable?

Date: 2004-04-19 01:17 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com
That's right, I forgot about that google thing. I've got to check it out on her site, see if it works well. It doesn't on Fiction Alley but I'll bet that's because of their multiple servers.

Oh, and you can incorporate google into your site. It doesn't work on subdomains, but you can set it up so that it does work for your site. Ask Switch about the specifics since she just did that with her recs site.

Cool. And we can set up the website so it'll go directly to the particular story, since we're starting out with searchable in mind.

As far as design, let's see...

- Simple, quick-loading (I'm on a dial-up which should say it all).
- No frames as mentioned above.
- Oh, dignified sounds so good.
- Percy is quite neat so we want it fairly clean with not a lot of "fussy" graphics and background and so forth. As tidy as Percy's desk.
- Clear, legible font (and not gaudy like I have there). Percy has very neat lettering and is quite proud of it.
- Percy's efficient, so we want it simple and easy to follow.
- I've been asked to give word-counts.

Am I getting greedy? Over enthused?

I'm good at .html so just let me know if you need anything... searchable archives is too complicated for me, though, but it looks like you've got excellent advice on that already.

My story is already .html coded, so just ask me to send the file to you when the time comes, alright?

Good, actually if you could send the coded version of your fic to dinkbird@earthlink.net, we can use it as our test story.

My dear, how absolutely wonderful! And don't thank me; I'm not even hosting the site! *blushes* [livejournal.com profile] and_love was wonderful for offering to host slashers.

About searchable archives--I don't do much coding, but I recently made my recs site searchable by using Google's own code, like Harry Potter Lexicon does. You know?

Anyway, go to my search page here (http://aeristerra.com/switchknife/search.htm), right-click it and go to 'view source'. In the source code, skip to the part which says 'Search Google'; there's a block of code after that that you can just copy into your own search.htm file, by changing my site address for yours, and by just taking out the phrase 'recommendations'. You can also take out the IMG SRC tag if you don't want a Google logo on your page, the way it's there on mine. :) You can change all the color codes (e.g. #CC3300) with whatever colors you like, but they aren't crucial. All you really have to do is swap my site address for yours within the 'Search Google' tags, and that's it.

That's it! I'm so happy that you have a site for the Ficathon!

I've wanted a Percy site for so long. I'm like a mother whose daughter *Icarus visualizes cross-dressed Percy - shakes head to clear image* is getting married.

*fuss, fuss - Preen!*
