That may be because I haven't learned the secret handshake yet, so haven't been allowed in the treehouse.

It could be because I have an awful memory for names and keep forgetting that my contract states that I'm only allowed to speak to other BNFs. Though I do like the "thy minion shalt polish thy boots" clause in the contract (my boots are in terrible shape).

Unfortunately, I have less than an eighth of a minion to polish them, and I prefer to keep lizardspots hard at work drawing slashy art.

Of course, I do have pogebrin now.... *looks thoughtful*

It is a Big Name Fan, implying someone with some sort of celebrity status in fandom. A big writer with lots of influence, most often.

I had to ask, too. Though I was so proud, it took me months of trying to figure it out before I ponied up.

BNF = Big Name Fan.

Basically it means someone most people in fandom have heard of, as in:

"Gosh, that Icarus is a twit"

*audience nods* or

"Gosh, Icarus has put out another story in some pairing no one cares about"

*lj friends roll their eyes in agreement* or

"Gosh if Icarus doesn't shut up about Percy I'm gonna defriend her."

*mob gathers with baseball bats.*

The minor-BNFs (cursive coined the term) are the ones where you go,

"Gosh such-and-so is a twit" and the audience says, "Who?"

"You know, the one who wrote [fill in story here]."

"Oh."

The non-BNFs are the ones where you go, "Gosh, such-and-so is a twit" and the audience blinks, "Who?"

"The one who wrote [fill in story here]."

*blank look* "Okay. If you say so."

It's name recognition, pure and simple.
