Why This Must Be Read: This story was given to me in a back alley by a shifty-eyed recc’er in a trenchcoat and dark glasses. “Psst,” she said, “this is angst.” She said it like it was the good stuff, the kind that’s supposed to be bad for you.

By the time she glided away in her black limo, I stared down at the brown-wrapped package and felt like I’d been given a snuff film. Produced by the mob. Then I read it.

Gaia does not pull any punches. The story is unflinching and situation at the beginning is genuinely disturbing, though we see only the aftermath, which is what the rest of the story is about – Rodney dealing with the aftermath when there is precious little he can do.

The darkness merely marks this story as rare in SGA. Gaia’s real achievement is in making a situation so bleak uplifting and moving. And Rodney doesn’t say a word.

Okay, now that I have myself slightly under control, I will attempt to say in a deep portentious voice, breath hissing through the Darth Vader mask: "This is for the Dark Side challenge at sga_flashfic."

Rodney is best Jedi knight ever, and by "best" I mean whining, complaining, bitching and irritated at Yoda who's sent him to a squelchingly green planet to get him out of his (sizeable) comfort zone.

Where he meets a Sith Lord. I leave it to you to enjoy how unimpressed the Sith Lord is and Rodney's very real talents.

"You're not a very good Jedi, are you?" the Sith Lord said.
"Oh, excuse me, I am an excellent Jedi," Rodney said.
