I'm reading Stargate SG-1 slash, and feeling like I'm cheating on a lover.

Now, now, never fear. I'm not really a multiple fandom kind of gal. But I love the show and, yes, Col. Jack O'Neil/Dr. Daniel Jackson is canon. Anyone who doubts it should watch The Abyss, and all of Daniel's impassioned attempts to help Jack, and Jack's soul-bearing honesty.

Yeah.

So, good SG-1 slash is very, very rare. This fandom is not like the Harry Potter fandom, with brilliant professional-quality authors scattered around like gems. But the ever-wonderful [livejournal.com profile] ship_manifesto has opening my eyes to some great stories.

I started poking around the fandom last Christmas as I laughed my ass off at the tongue-in-cheek, 365-day Dr. Jackson's Diary.

This weekend I've delighted in the deliciously long, angsty and lovingly detailed stories of Anna S.. I could not get enough of her stories.

But the truly canon, subtle and oh-so-real award goes to Jonah in the Whale's Loki's Curse.

I'm new to the SG-1 fandom, recently introduced via the Ship Manifesto(http://www.livejournal.com/community/ship_manifesto/14712.html).

This is a fabulous story. The plot, pacing, imagination and humor were perfectly in line with SG-1, and the show should contact you to submit a script, really. The little asides that make the show so enjoyable were all there: Jack wanting to have Thor lift his car from impound, Daniel's complaint about ruining a cop's career, the cheerful, clever banter -- and you didn't short the plot to get to the sex! I could *hug* you for that.

Your characterization of Jack could not be more perfect. His attitude, sarcastic humor, and masculine energy... it was him all the way. He was intelligent, insightful, if not always eloquent. And so down to earth and real.

The fact that even during sex Daniel was off in a higher ethical plane... that was so him. That sad smile, falling asleep with the book on his chest, forgetting he was supposed to drop Jack off at the police station, were all so effective in invoking Daniel Jackson without feminizing him. The best moment was that very vivid morning with Daniel scuffing around in his underwear, not quite awake, with a blanket draped around his shoulders. I can really see him doing this.

The slow build-up was ideal. The little hints of Jack's slightly-more-than-platonic interest. The Daniel-watching, noticing his scent, picturing Daniel in his bare feet. Subtle, and I think you've captured the essence of their relationship: it's more than desire, more than empathy, and more than anything as simple or ordinary as love. They understand each other, yet don't see each other all that well. Jack in your story called it "striations" in their relationship. It's strange, but that's what makes the two of them so complicated and interesting.

This was satisfying story even without the slash, but with it -- oh man. The link I clicked didn't show me the rating -- (how much space do they give you in these review boxes, because I can go on for a while) -- so the ending... I didn't know it was coming, and it just totally blew me away. It was sensual, real, passionate, simple, yet still stayed in touch with the story.

I've read it three times now, and I'm completely convinced this is the most canon slash story out there. This is how it would happen.

Thanks for a something beyond a great read. I'd recommend this to anyone who's a SG-1 fan, and in fact kept the boyfriend awake this morning telling him how terrific your story is.

Yours,
Icarus

I have finally decided that although I'm not into "shipping" to any great extent, the [livejournal.com profile] ship_manifesto is a great idea. Hats off to all of you at the Manifesto, and the hard-working authors who've made it possible.
