I'm reading Stargate SG-1 slash, and feeling like I'm cheating on a lover.
Now, now, never fear. I'm not really a multiple fandom kind of gal. But I love the show and, yes, Col. Jack O'Neil/Dr. Daniel Jackson is canon. Anyone who doubts it should watch The Abyss, and all of Daniel's impassioned attempts to help Jack, and Jack's soul-bearing honesty.
Yeah.
So, good SG-1 slash is very, very rare. This fandom is not like the Harry Potter fandom, with brilliant professional-quality authors scattered around like gems. But the ever-wonderful
ship_manifesto has opening my eyes to some great stories.
I started poking around the fandom last Christmas as I laughed my ass off at the tongue-in-cheek, 365-day Dr. Jackson's Diary.
This weekend I've delighted in the deliciously long, angsty and lovingly detailed stories of Anna S.. I could not get enough of her stories.
But the truly canon, subtle and oh-so-real award goes to Jonah in the Whale's Loki's Curse.
I'm new to the SG-1 fandom, recently introduced via the Ship Manifesto(http://www.livejournal.com/community/ship_manifesto/14712.html).
This is a fabulous story. The plot, pacing, imagination and humor were perfectly in line with SG-1, and the show should contact you to submit a script, really. The little asides that make the show so enjoyable were all there: Jack wanting to have Thor lift his car from impound, Daniel's complaint about ruining a cop's career, the cheerful, clever banter -- and you didn't short the plot to get to the sex! I could *hug* you for that.
Your characterization of Jack could not be more perfect. His attitude, sarcastic humor, and masculine energy... it was him all the way. He was intelligent, insightful, if not always eloquent. And so down to earth and real.
The fact that even during sex Daniel was off in a higher ethical plane... that was so him. That sad smile, falling asleep with the book on his chest, forgetting he was supposed to drop Jack off at the police station, were all so effective in invoking Daniel Jackson without feminizing him. The best moment was that very vivid morning with Daniel scuffing around in his underwear, not quite awake, with a blanket draped around his shoulders. I can really see him doing this.
The slow build-up was ideal. The little hints of Jack's slightly-more-than-platonic interest. The Daniel-watching, noticing his scent, picturing Daniel in his bare feet. Subtle, and I think you've captured the essence of their relationship: it's more than desire, more than empathy, and more than anything as simple or ordinary as love. They understand each other, yet don't see each other all that well. Jack in your story called it "striations" in their relationship. It's strange, but that's what makes the two of them so complicated and interesting.
This was satisfying story even without the slash, but with it -- oh man. The link I clicked didn't show me the rating -- (how much space do they give you in these review boxes, because I can go on for a while) -- so the ending... I didn't know it was coming, and it just totally blew me away. It was sensual, real, passionate, simple, yet still stayed in touch with the story.
I've read it three times now, and I'm completely convinced this is the most canon slash story out there. This is how it would happen.
Thanks for a something beyond a great read. I'd recommend this to anyone who's a SG-1 fan, and in fact kept the boyfriend awake this morning telling him how terrific your story is.
Yours,
Icarus
I have finally decided that although I'm not into "shipping" to any great extent, the
ship_manifesto is a great idea. Hats off to all of you at the Manifesto, and the hard-working authors who've made it possible.

Date: 2004-09-29 09:58 am (UTC)Uh-oh. I have Jack/Daniel story started in my head. Set in season 7, light-hearted. Daniel starts remembering a, er, challenge Jack set for himself.
~*~*~
The lunchroom was filled with the usual clatter of silverware, and the scent of stale cleanser overlaid with the smell of overcooked canned food. Jack dropped his tray on the table and proceeded to attempt to identify just what it was he was eating.
Daniel followed more slowly, dazed. He peered deeply into his coffee, as if all the secrets of the universe could be found in a styrofoam cup, before finally taking a sip. His head jerked up and he blinked, glancing around him. "I - I think I remember this place."
"Gee, that's a shame," Jack commiserated, stabbing into something vaguely green. "Of all the places to remember on base, this would be at the bottom of my list." He shook his head and poked at what looked like soggy macaroni and cheese, though there was no way to be sure. "I take it you remember the food, too."
"No. No, I mean, it's specific. I remember being in this room. I was sitting on a table - over there..."
"Sitting on the table?" Sam's eyebrows drew together as she threw Teal'c a puzzled look.
"Ah." Jack pointed his fork at Daniel, swallowing that last bite. "I'd, ah, ride that memory out before I go spilling anything. Just a suggestion."
"Sir," Sam interrupted with an anxious expression, elbows on the table. "I think that we should encourage Daniel. No matter how trivial the memory might seem to us, it could trigger other memories. Sense memories, food, might stay with him longer than more complex thoughts and emotions." She leaned forward. "There's a reason these are the kinds of things we remember from our childhood."
"Yeah. Sense memories," Jack echoed. He leaned back in his chair, a beady eye trained on Daniel.
"I was just getting a jelly donut," Daniel said, with a bit of his old defensiveness returning, "I don't know why that particular table is so important, but it is."
Jack had clearly given up on the mac and cheese and dropped his fork on his plate as he stood. He gave Daniel a meaningful look. "I'm just saying he might want to be careful, that's all."
Daniel almost radiated concentration in the tension of his shoulders. He set down the cup and made a cutting gesture as he stared at the table. "I picked up the the donut, and spilled sugar down the front of my uniform -" Sam smiled fondly, but didn't say anything.
"- I brushed at it and then I -" Daniel's jaw went slack and he blinked once, slowly. "I... oh." His face tipped up towards Jack.
"Yeah," Jack patted his shoulder as he left. "You never know where these memory zaps will take you, eh, Danny?"
"Don't try to push. It'll come back to you." Sam reached across the table encouragingly, but Daniel simply stared at Jack open-mouthed.
~*~*~
The team assembled in the elevator on the way to the 1300 briefing on PXR-261, what Jack had named the Planet of the Apes.
Sam rolled her eyes. "Simian intelligence is just unusually advanced there, sir."
"Yeah, you watch. We're gonna meet someone in a gladiator suit named Corneal."
"I don't think that's what Corneal wore," Daniel pointed out.
(oops -- gotta run)

Date: 2004-10-01 03:34 am (UTC)Sam rolled her eyes. "Simian intelligence is just unusually advanced there, sir."
"Yeah, you watch." Jack tapped the elevator button and folded his hands behind his back, rocking back on his heels. "We're gonna meet someone in a gladiator suit named Cornelius."
"I don't think that's what Cornelius wore," Daniel pointed out, frowning a bit as he stared up at the ceiling. He focused on the upper right corner and suddenly gave it a piercing stare. He blinked rapidly and shook his head as if to clear it.
Jack shot him a look. "So you remember little shit like that. But you don't remember where the bathroom is?"
"I remember where the bathroom is," Daniel said.
"Yeah. After I showed you."
Daniel ignored this to stare at that corner, and then glanced over furtively at Jack. He let out a breath, but his eyes kept returning to that spot.
There was a long moment of silence until the elevator bumped to a stop.
Jack smiled, beaming as he stretched his shoulders. "You're remembering the elevator now, aren't you?"
"Oh, now, stop teasing him," Sam snorted in disgust, brushing past them into the echoing hall.
"Daniel Jackson recalled the elevator on a previous occasion, O'Neill."
"That's not what I meant."
They glanced back to find Daniel stepping backward out of the elevator, glancing back at it in confusion. "So… that really happened?"
"You betcha."
"What happened?"
Jack held the door for all of them. "Oh, nothing," he sing-songed, cheerfully aware that they couldn't pepper him with more questions with the general waiting. Sam gave him a frustrated stare as she pulled up a chair, while T'ealc merely raised an eyebrow at him.

Date: 2004-09-29 05:08 am (UTC)I wanted more from the characters and started seeking out fanfic, and found maybe a dozen stories, none of which really captured the characters.
Although all the characters are male, I suppose it's hard to slash when one character is a robot whose only orientation is for vacuum cleaners, one is an extremely heterosexual cat, one is insubstantial for most of the series, and nobody really likes anybody else. But since AUs are canonical, you'd think somebody would've come up with something better...
Sigh.
We HP fen really have it good, don't we?
