Hi all you tech-fans.

Well I've been using Haloscan for comments and fic-reviews on my site. I wasn't completely happy with it, it was a little slow and some people couldn't use it at all. But it was all right.

Now a whole bunch of comments have disappeared. I've discovered that this is the method Haloscan uses to get people to pay for the service. They offer it free, then after four months all the old reviews are "archived" (not deleted) and you can't get them back without paying for them. They don't tell you this up front, I had to hunt the info down.

Sneaky, huh?

Anyone got any ideas for a comment feature I can use on my site? I won't work with people who trick you like that.

For my regular blog, I use YACCS, which archives old comments in a way that they won't show up in the comment box but can still be exported by the owner.

For the fic I'm working on, I'm thinking that comments will just link to the LJ version of the story. I do wish I knew of something better; I've been looking at sites for guestbook software.

[Maybe forward this onto quickquotes/dailysnitch/sundayprophet and see if you get a wider response. I'd be interested.]

You know, I may be able to do the complex solution they offered. I have the webspace to use, and I'm sure it supports php. Just have to figure out how it works.

You know, I paid for HaloScan, and this is telling me that once I have 800 comments on my site, it's going to be archived? Dude, that sucks.

I'm hoping I won't hit 800 any time soon, and though that SEEMS like it shouldn't be a worry, I must have about 200 since July. Bastards.

Dammit. I might have to dig out Greymatter again, which I didn't want to do because then I'd have to put forwarding on everything, too. We'll see.

Well I was given a complicated solution here (http://www.philringnalda.com/remotedotcomments/).

What's Greymatter? *interested*

The easiest solution to me would seem: link the reviews to a livejournal thread that is open to anonymous responses. I don't think LJ changes the links overtime. I could be wrong about that though. Anyone knows for sure?
