I've no doubt he's terribly amused. What I find interesting is that this is a really powerful weapon. The Seawolf class is the largest attack sub in the world - it's the heavily armed attack sub in the world, 50 torpedos as opposed to 20, etc) - and this is the most advanced of its kind.

WG says "This is a fast fucker." It's dive speed is 39 knots, about 45 mph. Twice the speed of any conventional attack sub out there.

There aren't very many of them, only about 3 or 4. The Swedish have the quietest and best subs in the world (the Germans are close behind). The next US class of subs is the Los Angeles class, of which we have about 60 (WG says we need 100), and after that is the Sturgeon class (used for military intelligence so they aren't mentioned much).

I'm finding out from wildernessguru if this Seawolf can face off with the new Chinese Song class. There's a shallow water concern.

I suspect that the announcement of this sub is to throw a threat in the direction of China and its designs on Taiwan, since we're bogged down in Iraq.
