Goofing around in comments for The Languages of Dr. Daniel Jackson a couple drabbles popped up. I was vastly amused that no one argued with my claim that Daniel was probably into Dungeons & Dragons as a kid.

Who could resist? [livejournal.com profile] skt23 says I should post them, so okay.

Jack O'Neill, Linguist Extraordinaire

Jack and Daniel squeeze behind a tiny table at a Thai Restaurant.

"What? You don't know Thai?" Jack says it like an accusation.

Daniel retreats behind his menu. "No..."

"Thought you spoke eighty languages or something."

"Twenty-three. And I don't speak Thai. Though I know Sanskrit, which has had considerable historical influences on ancient Thai Buddhist texts..."

"Who speaks Sanskrit?" Jack squints at him while ordering #27. Daniel orders number #14, blushing.

"Well, no one actually. It's a dead language. And I don't really speak it, I just... know it. I can read it. Sort of. If I, uh, look up a few words."

"A few?"

"More than a few," Daniel admits.

"How much more than a few?"

Daniel sets down the menu and folds his arms.

"More than ten? Less than twenty?" Jack smirks at him and picks up his beer. "Hell. If that's 'speaking' then I know, oh let's see, Russian, German... Arabic -"

"Jack, it doesn't count if your entire vocabulary can't be repeated in mixed company."

Dungeon Master Daniel

"What? You were one of those nerds with the 'sword of power' and whatnot?"

"It wasn't a 'sword of power.' If you were lucky maybe you'd find one that had some kind of healing spell --"

"Oh this is rich..." Jack laughed.

"-- but half the time it would be cursed, so you were better off not picking it up."

"It looks like you didn't learn anything," Jack said wryly.

Daniel frowned a moment, lost in thought.

"Come to think of it... I always did pick it up. Couldn't resist." He grinned sheepishly as Jack groaned. "What? It could've been the Sword of Power! So then my group always had to go find a magic user –"

"Magic user?"

"- for an amulet or cure or…" Daniel spun his hands.

"Is that the technical term?"

"- or some other wild goose chase to bring me back to life."

"This is starting to sound real familiar."

"Yeah. Life hasn't changed much."

A Geek's Life, And I'm Not Really Ashamed
By Icarus

"So why'd you stop you're..." Jack smothered a belch as he searched for a polite word "... Dungeons and Dragons thing?"

"Oh, I started tutoring." Daniel sat with his beer bottle still mostly full and tucked between his knees. It was probably warm by now. The TV flickered with the sound off. When had TV died and been replaced by infomercials?

"Pay well, did it?"

Daniel licked his lips and hid a smile, slightly smug. "Not that kind of tutoring."

Jack frowned at first, then... "Oh -!"

He sat up and Daniel broke into a full grin.

"I think we both got C's. But I learned a lot." He took a swallow of his beer and made a face. No wonder he didn't like beer if he drank it warm and flat. "After that I started working at the Renaissance festival every summer."

Jack peered at him. "Renaissance festival? Didn't you do anything normal? Mow lawns? Work at MacDonald's?"

"Hey, I got to dress up and speak in a horribly fake Middle English." Daniel beamed, giving him a silly grin and toasting with the beer bottle. "I was 'Sir Lancelot' at the jousting display."

"Oh, now that's not Freudian."

"It was. Very." Daniel grinned. "Those Renaissance festivals were torrid places: a lot of teenagers, little supervision, role-playing, which seems to loosen people up."

"Kinky."

"What about you?"

"Role-playing? Not much, unless you count the dress blues in, um, unusual situations."

Daniel spluttered and burst out laughing. "I meant jobs, though this is getting interesting."

Jack was red-faced. "Oh," he shook his head. "I had a paper route but after that, no, no time. I was an eagle scout. They kept us pretty busy. Until I had enough of that whole 'clean cut boy next door' thing."

A slight smirk played at the corner of his mouth, and a mischievous sparkle, the sort you only caught if you knew Jack well.

"Jaaack... what'd'you do?" Daniel chided.

Jack's little smile was infinitely smug. "Everyone."

If I wasn't so dead tired I go over every reason why I love these. Daniel so played D&D. *geeks*

Daniel as a gamer is all too probable! Although I can't decide if he'd be a magic user or a fighter, obssessively learning all the spells or imagining himself brawny, bare-chested and wielding a large axe.

I love them, each and every one of them. Daniel playing D&D is so right, and the picking up things and dying *giggles* is just perfect.

"Jaaack... what'd'you do?" Daniel chided.

Jack's little smile was infinitely smug. "Everyone."

Oh yes, I can see this as well. *g*

Man! I loved the first one. I was grinning from ear to ear. Poor Daniel. He knows a lot, so when he doesn't know something, he gets razzed. And Jack does it so well. Heh. And Daniel's response to Jack's declaration that he knew lots of languages too . . . was priceless. :) It's all the better because I know the structure of German and Spanish, but I've forgotten most of the vocabulary, so I could make halfway decent sentences with a dictionary next to me, but I'd be hopeless without it.

Also, the second one was hysterical with Daniel and picking up the sword. I've never even played D&D, but I got the gist, and the bringing Daniel back to life bit? Inspired.
