How about having Harry make the connection a little more explicitly, in noticing that the stuff in the cauldron appears to be the same as the stuff he'd been avoiding on the way in? He doesn't even have to explicitly think anything about Snape's loss of control, although it might be amusing for him to do so.
Of course, it's possible that everyone else who reads it will be less dense than I am and figure it out immediately.
