Computer Problems are back.

I walked through the door after a late night at school to find wildernessguru frantic.

I broke this down to:

Problem with computer.

Again.

Eventually I got him to breathe and explain. His voice hits the upper registers and language deteriorates (further) when the computer blows up. He hates that sense of helplessness.

It's a registry problem. Again.

I can't fix it. Again.

It brought up household money issues. Again.

I have most of my system backed up this time, with the exception of the latest stories I've been working on (BlackOps!Jack and tboy's party story, damn it). And my homework that's due Friday. *sigh*

We're talking to the computer guy this afternoon. Fortunately I'm not getting an invalid disk error this time. Instead I have a configuration/registry issue. But the computer won't restart in Safe mode. It just starts to open windows and hangs. When I tried to run SCANREG it tells me it's backing up the registry, then restoring the registry... then it hangs.

Shit.

Computer problems can be really annoying.
But at least your problems sounds as if "only" your operating system has crashed. So you'll be most probably be able to get your data back. They can do that at the computer shops.

I hope you'll be able to work again, soon.

Btw, is there any kind of warranty since you've been there only a few weeks ago?

Oh good, I hope the data isn't gone. Because I really like that party story and I don't want to lose it.

Nope. Part of the deal of getting a lot of free work last time, including his restoring all my old directories, looking up the serial number for my copy of Word and then reinstalling what I didn't have backed up.

I don't think that your data is gone.
They're most likely able to connect your harddisk to another computer and simply download the data to e.g. a CD. Then you can reinstall your operating system and get your data back on harddisk.
But nevertheless you should let it check for physical damage. Just to be sure.

Oh, well, then I hope it won't get that expensive. But at least not all of the procedures made last time have to be done now.

Cool, that's good to know.

One thing you can say about computer problems: you learn a lot in the process. Six months ago I didn't even know what the registry was.

Your data is still there and should be just fine. You can ask 'em about it a data backup, it's actually quite easy. Just hook the hard drive up to another computer and they snag all the files you want.

Costs upward of $80 to do it, unless you have a geeky friend who can help you out, in which case, buy him a six pack of beer, that always goes over well. ;)

Not the fic! (Well, ok, I'm sorry about the homework, too.) I don't know jack shit about computers, when mine freaks out I just re-boot. If it ever did anything that wouldn't cover, I'd be in big trouble. Sigh. Good luck, I hope you can recover everything that wasn't backed up.
