The conversation with the homeless guy at the bus stop this morning defies description.

Then the bus driver says in a carnival voice: "We are now in the free ride area..." *beat* "... welcome to the Twilight Zone."

As he approached 5th Avenue he announced: "Next stop... 5th Avenue... Macy's, Nordstrom's... consumer heaven... the Frye Apartment guy."*

On my way to the office, a woman dressed as an apple handed me gift certificate for free ice cream.

This is really my kind of day.

* For Non-Seattlites: The Frye Apartment guy is a beloved fixture. He holds up a mysterious sign that says (among other things) the Frye Apartments and the Seattle police are the devil, and yells incoherently with a Carribbean accent. He has been there every day, all day, since at least 1997. Everyone knows he has a place to live, but his quest for vengeance on the Frye Apartment is legendary.

I'm still grinning.

And it was Chokhor Duchen yesterday, too, (one of four major Buddhist holidays).

It was a terrific day. When I arrived at work, someone had given me his projects a day earlier than I planned.

Terrific days are far and few in between. But they're lovely to have.

Is that the guy on fifth right near Westlake?

And have you ever seen the guy with the dreads and the Rasta hat and the stick who likes to stand in the intersection of 3rd and...Union, I think, and bang the stick on the ground and tell us we're all sinners for not being in church? Sunday only, I think.

Also, I think I know that bus driver. He's GREAT.

Yep. Right at 5th and Pine. I haven't seen the Rasta guy, but that's because I'm in church.

Just kidding. I'm usually home writing, if I'm even awake at that hour.

You know, I mentioned it to someone at work and he knew that bus driver, too.

Apparently it was a strange and serendipitous morning across this great land of ours. On my way to work this morning, the morning radio guy was talking about fights in restaurants. Having been one of only two witnesses to a particularly spectacular one a few years ago, I commented to my roommate that I should call in and tell the story. Before I could decide if I felt like wasting my cell minutes on a call to DC101, my friend Brian, the only other witness to said restaurant brawl, called in and told the story. It was wonderful and bizarre.

Oh, and here in DC we have a great Metro driver who sings all the station names. I adore him.

He's on the Yellow line, and we only get him when we're late for work. (When we're on time, we get the drawling guy who makes "Huntington" into like five syllables.) He's worth it though!

Oh, that's why I never heard him. I only rode the Red line.

Though I've never forgotten the man practicing opera in the Metro station downtown. The whole station was filled with this lovely, rich tenor....

That sounds exactly like the bus driver I had for awhile, before he switched routes...maybe it's the same dude. Man, I love Seattle. You also find *something* unexpected there.
