Mac users -- HEEEEEEELLLLLLP!

I'm trying to download music files from RapidShare and Yousendit, and while one of the songs downloaded correctly, the rest of them are now just streaming. They'll play, I can save the link, but that's not what I want. I need to download the entire file.

Hunh? Wha-? I'm generally a PC user and this whole "digital music" miasma is new to me anyways.

Are there some settings that I need to change, somewhere, somehow so the file will download and not stream?

Mac user, also going "whaaa...?" You might want to try control-click-save-as on the download link, if you haven't already. I assume you're on Panther/Tiger, using Safari? If not, I may be missing something, as I've never used anything older than Panther, and I never use any browser other than Safari on my Mac, because it's just that fabulous. *g*

Okay, I tried to download it again in Safari.

I got the same streaming -- only this time a Quicktime plug-in prompted me for my connection speed. *scratches head* I don't want to run these music files in Quicktime. Or any other streaming program, I want to download them.

I'm going to try to Save As first now, see if that helps....

Hmm. Same thing.

It's not a problem with either Rapidshare or Yousendit, because I tested a mp3 I was emailed.

The weird part is that it worked great with the first song I downloaded. Perhaps a program I have open is messing this up. I do have Fetch open.

I'll close things and see what happens. *puzzled and --gah*

If you can use Firefox

...right-click on any empty space on the page, click "View Page Source". Click on the "Media" tab, then find the link you want to dl in the "Address" box. Highlight the link & hit "Save as". Hope this helps.

Oh, I was excited for a second there. Then it turned out that my browser options are Explorer, Safari and Netscape.

I do have these files downloaded at home (pets Icarus' old win98 machine with a dial-up account that takes 15 minutes per song to d/l). I guess what I'll have to do is email them to my work address when I get home.

I was able to get some of the files to d/l instead of stream, based on Serious' advice above, but not all of them. Yousendit is still having problems.

I know nothing about music or Macs, but I wanted to share this--maybe it'll help you destress.

I was out shopping with my mom today and we passed a Walgreen's with a sign out front advertising its specials. One of the lines read "WG ICE CREAM 2/5.00". My first thought was: the Guru has his own line of ice cream?

I occasionally have this problem, though never with ysi or rapidshare. I've always assumed it was that the site had been set up not to permit d/l.

Heh. I don't think the network administrator at my summer temp job would go for that. *snickers*

I finally figured out what was going on but I was so swamped at the office (two print deadlines in one day) I couldn't post the solution -- apparently my system at the office has QuickTime software that I don't own at home. So the download will default and play on the QuickTime Plug-in instead.

All I had to do was select the link (without clicking on it, which would open QuickTime instantly) scroll down the menu options, then select Download Link To Disc. Yes, that reads like it will just copy the link, but in fact it does d/l at that point.

Do you know how many times I hovered over the link and then - gah! - accidentally clicked it? Oh yes. All day long.

You might be able to change things in the prefs. For example, in Firefox, in the prefs, under Downloads, you can specify how the browser handles various file types.

I was able to get the files in prefs to download to the right file, but for some reason the darned thing kept defaulting to this Quick Time plug-in. So I have to figure out how to disable the plug-in, or at least make it so it's not the default.
