Fire Update

Well,
wildernessguru is in the building now. He says it's smoky, but other than the door -- which the fire department smashed in -- he doesn't see any damage. They think the fire started when a tenant on the first floor burned some candles and caught their shower curtain on fire.
The property management firm says the building is habitable except for the three apartments that got torched. WG concurs. The kitty's home and he's a little over-excited, but okay.
Narrow squeak. We were clearly quite lucky. And when I get home tonight we're going to wash all the sheets, all the bedding, all the clothes, over and over again, until we get the smell of smoke out of them.
And we're watching a movie.
ETA: True to form,
wildernessguru is already fine-tuning the emergency kit to take into account certain factors he hadn't considered.

Date: 2005-09-27 08:50 pm (UTC)Do you have renter's insurance (or your landlord's homeowner's insurance) that will cover a housecleaning and drycleaning your clothes/linens?
Having dealt with a housefire a few months ago, there are a few cleaning companies that specialize in eliminating smoke smell (and all the poisons associated with it). If you want more info, let me know and I'll get it for you.

Date: 2005-09-27 09:06 pm (UTC)When the house next to mine burned a few years back, the cats were incredibly good about the carriers, even when I stuffed four of them into the same big one! Aside from having to hunt them down (a few fled in terror when the fire trucks pulled up) I had no trouble with them at all.

Date: 2005-09-27 11:21 pm (UTC)Interestingly, the coat closet didn't get any smoke (though my dresser sure did).
Thanks for the image of stopping by for tea and the tumble-dryer. It made a warm and compelling image.

I love that. In case this were to ever happen again, you'll be even better prepared.

Date: 2005-09-28 02:35 am (UTC)I'm glad you're all right. And I can't panic when I know you're already safe. I'm glad you are!
Sorry I've been missing lately. I've been passing out early.

Date: 2005-09-28 02:53 am (UTC)I am sorry this happened, but am happy for you that your apartment was OK. That's terrible for the three households that weren't fine, of course.
WG sounds staggeringly unflappable, in a crisis. What an endearing trait.
