Well, [livejournal.com profile] wildernessguru is in the building now. He says it's smoky, but other than the door -- which the fire department smashed in -- he doesn't see any damage. They think the fire started when a tenant on the first floor burned some candles and caught their shower curtain on fire.

The property management firm says the building is habitable except for the three apartments that got torched. WG concurs. The kitty's home and he's a little over-excited, but okay.

Narrow squeak. We were clearly quite lucky. And when I get home tonight we're going to wash all the sheets, all the bedding, all the clothes, over and over again, until we get the smell of smoke out of them.

And we're watching a movie.

I'm glad to hear everything and everyone's okay. [Cats are extremely good at noticing that there's a serious problem and being on best behavior while you evacuate them from a fire.]

Do you have renter's insurance (or your landlord's homeowner's insurance) that will cover a housecleaning and drycleaning your clothes/linens?

Having dealt with a housefire a few months ago, there are a few cleaning companies that specialize in eliminating smoke smell (and all the poisons associated with it). If you want more info, let me know and I'll get it for you.

BTW, the folks over at Making Light have a lot of info on emergency kits if you need.

Wow! You guys were lucky! I just went back and read the original fire post, and, man...that's scary. Glad to hear you're all safe and were able to move back.

Glad you all (including Monte-kitty) are ok!

When the house next to mine burned a few years back, the cats were incredibly good about the carriers, even when I stuffed four of them into the same big one! Aside from having to hunt them down (a few fled in terror when the fire trucks pulled up) I had no trouble with them at all.

Thank goodness all three of you are okay and your apartment didn't suffer much damage. Now I'm wishing you lived nearby, because at least then Mum and I could make you tea while you borrowed our tumble-dryer!

I hope you have an unstressful evening after all that excitement.

Oh, that's the plan. And laundry.

Interestingly, the coat closet didn't get any smoke (though my dresser sure did).

Thanks for the image of stopping by for tea and the tumble-dryer. It made a warm and compelling image.

Sorry I've been missing lately. I've been passing out early.

I missed all this before now, since I was at work (my time) when this happened, I guess.

I am sorry this happened, but am happy for you that your apartment was OK. That's terrible for the three households that weren't fine, of course.

WG sounds staggeringly unflappable, in a crisis. What an endearing trait.
