Bush's Faked Conference.

LOL! I'm just cynical enough to be amused that Bush staged a phony press conference with prepped officers set to feed him pat lines. He did the same thing in New Orleans.

My favorite line is still Bush saying, "There is tremendous support for your efforts." Riiiiiiight. Like our soldiers don't have live journals and internet access. Jeeze.

The Bush administration's solution to everything: lie, and hope nobody checks.

Well, bear in mind that the congressional elections are next year. So the senate is going to be busy getting re-elected (and losing elections) and trying to appease constituents who are angry about gas prices, Iraq, and Katrina (and gas prices to be honest). They won't do anything that Bush wants that's unpopular, and he won't want to risk his network of Republicans losing their elections.

So his hands are tied from November 2005-November 2006.

The congressional elections next will decide how much power he'll have from November 2006-November 2007.

If either the House or the Senate goes back to a Democratic majority, Bush will be completely screwed. It'll be like that Capitol One commercial: the answer to everything will be "No."

Then regardless of whether or not the congress is still Republican, from 2007 thru 2008 -- well that's the election year. He'll be a lame duck president. Everyone knows he's going out of power and can't be re-elected. This is when you need a lot of favors to get anything done, and Bush has bullied to get his way too often. He's going to be stymied.

That's why he tried to gut Social Security this year. He knew this was his last window for it.

And he failed.
